Auggies suffer first loss in top-10 battle

MINNEAPOLIS – Surrendering a pair of special teams goals in the second period, the Augsburg University women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 2-0 to Gustavus Adolphus College in a battle of top-10-ranked teams in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg, ranked No. 8 in the latest USCHO.com and No. 7 in the latest D-III Hockey News Division III national polls, was outshot by Gustavus, ranked No. 5 and No. 4 in the national polls, by a 33-23 margin in the game. The Gusties scored a power-play goal 58 seconds into the second period, then scored on a shorthanded goal at the 6:40 mark of the middle frame.
• First-year goalie Kayla Simonson (FY, Delano, Minn./Delano HS), making her fourth collegiate start, surrendered the first two goals of her college career on Friday, collecting 31 saves.
• Nora Stepan (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had four shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Grace Bonnell (SO, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and Emily Cronkhite (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) had three shots each.

FOR THE FOES
• Noelle Hemr had a goal and an assist for the Gusties, scoring a shorthanded goal and assisting on a power-play goal by Eva Nelson.
• Lily Timmons had 23 saves in goal for Gustavus.
