Wildcats pull away late to top Auggies

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Despite holding a 10-point lead in the third quarter, the Augsburg University women's basketball team fell to the St. Catherine University Wildcats 64-55 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Each team spent time with the advantage with 11 lead changes in the first quarter, but it was the Auggies holding an 18-16 lead at the first quarter break. Augsburg led wire-to-wire and outscored the Wildcats 13-10 in the second frame, taking a 31-26 lead at halftime.
• The Auggie lead grew to as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but the Wildcats closed the frame on a 12-2 scoring run to tie the game at 44 each entering the fourth. Augsburg held a narrow advantage at 49-48 with 6:12 remaining in the final quarter, but the Wildcats finished strong once again with a 16-6 scoring run that earned them the victory.
• Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm, with the Auggies hitting 30.4% of their field goal attempts (17-of-56) and the Wildcats hitting at a 33.9% clip (21-of-62). Augsburg turned the ball over 19 times while St. Kate's finished with 18 giveaways, but the Auggies managed an 11-10 scoring edge in points off turnovers.
Kalena Myers (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) finished with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, also nabbing six rebounds and four steals.
Anja Smith (SR, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) logged her second double-double of the season with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and a block. Katie Manecke (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) neared double figures with nine points, six rebounds, and an assist.
Melanie Delestrez (SO, Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) led the effort off the bench with seven points and five rebounds.

FOR THE FOES
• Hattie Fox paced the Wildcats with 15 points, four rebounds, and a steal.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will wrap up their season on Saturday (2/17) at Macalester with tip off scheduled for 1 pm.
