Auggies drop midweek meeting with Cardinals

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University men's basketball team played host to the Saint Mary's University Cardinals on Wednesday evening, dropping an 89-80 decision at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After playing to an 18-18 tie near the midpoint of the opening half, the Cardinals went on a scoring tear with 33 points in the final 12 minutes of the half to take a
51-40 lead to halftime.
• The Auggies managed to cut the deficit to six points on three occasions in the second half, but the Cardinals maintained the advantage throughout on the way to a nine-point win.
• The Auggies posted the more efficient field goal percentage by the slimmest of margins, hitting 28 of their 56 attempts from the field (50.0%) compared to the Cardinals' 33-of-67 performance.
Trent Gomez (FY, Two Harbors, Minn./Tow Harbors HS) set a new career mark with 21 points in the game, hitting seven of hist 14 attempts from the field and adding two rebounds and an assist.
Colin Meade (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) neared his season high with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, also adding seven rebounds and a block. Caden Scales (SR, Richfield, Minn./Eastview HS) contributed nine points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and a block.
Elias Batala (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) reached double figures in 22 minutes off the bench, finishing with 14 points, three rebounds, and a block.
 
FOR THE FOES
• The duo of Owen Ziegler and Breyton Buysman exploded for 32 points each for the Cardinals, new career bests for each of them.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will host Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday (2/10) in their final home game of the season.
