Auggies lose two to Wesleyan in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Augsburg University baseball team continued play at the Tucson Invitational on Monday afternoon, falling to Wesleyan University (Conn.) in both games of a doubleheader at Kino Sports Complex.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Wesleyan 7, Augsburg 6; Wesleyan 10, Augsburg 2
LOCATION: Kino Sports Complex, Tucson, Ariz.
RECORDS: Augsburg 0-8 overall, Wesleyan 3-0 overall

GAME ONE: WESLEYAN 7, AUGSBURG 6

• For the third time in as many games in Tucson, the Auggies stuck first in game one with Ty Gage (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) batting in Stanley Regguinti (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) in the top of the first.
• The Auggie lead would expand to 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Drew Jenkins (SO, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS) tripled down the right field line to bring both Austin Lang (SO, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) and Adam Marshall (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) around to score.
• After the Cardinals got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, the Auggie offense got back to work with three more runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead behind RBI from Marshall, Lang, and Aaron Jones (FY, Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS).
• The Cardinals captured the momentum for the remainder of the game, scoring six unanswered over the games final four innings to seal the 7-6 win.
• Despite the loss, the Auggies managed to outhit the Cardinals 11-10 in the game. 
Jake Skogrand (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was effective as Augsburg's starting pitcher, going 6.0 innings while allowing six hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts. Caleb Tays (FY, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) made just the second appearance of his career in relief of Skogrand, ultimately being charged with the loss after allowing four hits and three earned runs in his 0.2 innings pitched.
• Lang had a strong game as Augsburg's designated hitter, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Marshall was also effective, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in.

GAME TWO: WESLEYAN 10, AUGSBURG 2
• The Auggies and Cardinals traded blows early in game two with each team scoring a single run in the second and third innings to wind up in a 2-2 tie entering the fourth. Jones and Marshall each recorded RBI singles for Augsburg.  
• After tacking on runs in the fourth and sixth innings, the Cardinals blew the game open with six runs in the seventh to secure the win.
Vincent Rupp (SO, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) made the start on the mound for the Auggies in game two, being charged with the loss after allowing six hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.

FOR THE FOES
• Ernie Little had a four-hit afternoon for the Cardinals, going a combined 4-for-8 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.  

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will be idle on Tuesday before resuming play in Arizona with games against Crown College and Wesleyan University on Wednesday at Kino Sports Complex.
