Auggies, Gusties split pair of pitching gems

MINNEAPOLIS -- Olivia O'Connor (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Morgann Paaske (JR, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central HS) both had strong performances in the pitching circle for the Augsburg University softball team, as the Auggies split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 in the opener and gaining a 2-1 win in the second game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg was limited to just three hits in the first game by Gustavus pitcher Maizie Anderson, who struck out eight against two walks in a complete-game shutout.
• Augsburg pitcher O'Connor delivered her seventh complete game of the season, striking out five against four walks and five hits. She threw 117 pitches, including 71 strikes.
• The Auggies had scoring chances in the second half of the game, but a lineout double play ended a threat in the fourth inning, runners were stranded after a double by Libby Moore (SR, Springville, Iowa/Springville HS) and a single by Jaime Olson (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) in the fifth, and a runner on one-out error was stranded in the sixth.
• In addition to Moore's and Olson's hits, Zoie Johnson (JR, Carlton, Minn./Esko HS) also had a base hit in the first game, a single in the fourth inning.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Paaske claimed her seventh complete game of the season in the pitching circle, improving to 9-3 on the season with a five-strikeout performance, against one walk and six hits. She threw 110 pitches in seven innings, with 70 strikes.
• The Auggies scratched out a pair of runs against Gustavus starter Ava Hamsund, who had seven strikeouts against no walks and four hits. Torrie Rehder (JR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) led off the first inning with a single and moved to second on a fielding error. She moved to third on a bunt single by Katie Manecke (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), and came home on a sacrifice bunt by Lola Pilon (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy HS).
• Gustavus tied the game with a run in the fifth inning, but Augsburg took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth. Paaske led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jayden Evenson (SO, Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee HS), and scored on a single to right by Rehder.

FOR THE FOES
• Peyton Stevermer had an RBI double in the sixth inning of the first game for Gustavus.
• Macy McNally drove in Stevermer on an RBI double in the fifth inning of the second game.

• Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead in an MIAC doubleheader on Sunday (4/13) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
