Auggies secure split with Johnnies

MINNEAPOLIS –The Augsburg University baseball team returned to Parade Stadium for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint John's University on Thursday afternoon, splitting with the Johnnies after winning game one 4-3 in walk-off fashion and dropping game two 18-5.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Augsburg 4, Saint John's 3; Saint John's 18, Augsburg 5 (7 inn.)
LOCATION: Parade Stadium
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-18 overall (3-9 MIAC), Saint John's 18-9 overall (7-3 MIAC)

GAME ONE: AUGSBURG 4, SAINT JOHN'S 3

• Adam Marshall (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) put the Auggies on the board in the top of the first, lacing a hard-hit single to center field to score Stanley Regguinti (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS). The Johnnies responded with a three-run second inning to take a 3-1 lead.
• Augsburg pulled within one run in the third when Josh Udelhofen (JR, Janesville, Minn./Janesville Craig HS) hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Carter Peterson (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) to score. The Auggies would go on to tie the game in the sixth when Regguinti scored on a wild pitch.
• Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third, Lance Nayman (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) hit a ground ball to third base and managed to reach base safely after the third baseman's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing pinch runner Davis Wick (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) to score the game-winning run.
Austin Lang (SO, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) tossed a gem for the Auggies, pitching a complete game to earn his second win of the season, allowing just three hits and a single earned run with six strikeouts in seven full innings of work.
• Regguinti and Marshall each finished 2-for-4 in game one at the plate.

GAME TWO: SAINT JOHN'S 18, AUGSBURG 5
• The Johnnies were the first team on the board in game two with a run each in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
• Augsburg managed to gain the lead with a three-run second inning, with runs scoring on a passed ball, an RBI double from Nayman, and an RBI single from Ty Gage (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS).
• After the Johnnies regained the lead in the top of the third with a two-run homer, Augsburg jumped back in front in the bottom half of the frame with one run scoring off the bat of Udelhofen and another scoring via error.
• The Saint John's offense would blow the game open from that point, scoring 14 unanswered runs to take game two in seven innings.
• Starting pitcher Jake Skogrand (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was charged with the loss, allowing seven hits and seven runs with three strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of work.
• Gage logged the only multi-hit game for the Auggies, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
