Softball scores pair of extra-inning wins

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Scoring nine combined runs in extra innings, the Augsburg University softball team claimed a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at Carleton College on Sunday, with a 9-5, eight-inning win in the opener and an 11-7, eight-inning win in the second game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Tied 4-4 going into the eighth inning, Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring five runs. The Auggies had just two hits in the frame -- an RBI double by Jayden Evenson (SO, Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee HS) and a two-run single by Zoie Johnson (JR, Carlton, Minn./Esko HS) -- but also took advantage of a fielding error that brought home a run, two hit batters and a bases-loaded walk.
• Augsburg opened the game with a run in the first inning, as Torrie Rehder (JR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) led off the game with a single, moved to third on a groundout and stolen base, and scored on an RBI groundout by Lola Pilon (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy HS).
• Carleton tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Auggies went ahead with a three-run fifth inning. Katie Manecke (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) walked, moved to third on a pair of passed balls, and scored on an RBI double by Pilon. Morgann Paaske (JR, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central HS) then hit a two-run homer to left, her second home run of the season, to give the Auggies a 4-1 advantage. But Carleton scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, eventually forcing extra innings.
• Libby Moore (SR, Springville, Iowa/Springville HS) struck out one against two walks and four hits in four innings of pitching, and Olivia O'Connor (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) earned the pitching win in relief, striking out two against no walks and six hits in four innings.
• Rehder, Johnson and Paaske had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game, with Manecke and Paaske scoring two runs each.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four-and-a-half innings, but Carleton scored six straight runs to force extra innings again. The Auggies sent seven batters to the plate and scored four runs in the eighth inning, with just one hit -- a two-run single by Jaime Olson (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS). Augsburg also took advantage of a three walks and two wild pitches to score a pair of runs.
• The Auggies scored four runs in the second inning. A pair of errors, a bases-loaded walk and a triple steal with the bases loaded brought in a pair of runs, and Pilon hit a two-out, two-run single to bring in the other runs.
• Rehder led off the fourth inning with a single and stole second, and came home after Johnson reached base on a fielding error.
• Paaske reached second base on an error to lead off the fifth inning, then scored on a pair of passed balls. Evenson walked and scored on a two-out single by Manecke.
• Olivia Hennager (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), Evenson and Paaske scored two runs each for the Auggies.
• Paaske improved to 12-3 on the season with her ninth complete-game pitching effort, striking out one against two walks and 11 hits. She had 54 strikes among her 94 pitches.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• At 24-8 overall, Augsburg has now claimed the most wins in a softball season since 1992, when the Auggies went 24-12 overall (16-4 MIAC). Augsburg's 9-5 MIAC record marks its most conference wins in a season since 2018 (13-9 MIAC, 22-18 overall).

FOR THE FOES
• Megan Smith had two hits and drove in two runs for Carleton in the first game, while Helen Moses had two hits, including a double.
• Bryanna Schaffer went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the second game.

• Augsburg travels to face Bethel, ranked No. 17 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III national rankings, in a doubleheader on Tuesday (4/23) at 3:30 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
