Auggies drop Saturday doubleheader in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – The Augsburg University baseball team headed north for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference clash with the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon, falling in both games of the doubleheader at Wade Stadium.

THE BASICS

RECORDS: Augsburg 3-15 overall (0-6 MIAC), St. Scholastica 13-6 overall (3-3 MIAC)

GAME ONE: ST. SCHOLASTICA 12, AUGSBURG 2
• The Auggies were the first team on the scoreboard in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first when Adam Marshall (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) brought Ty Gage (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) home with an RBI single to center field.
• After the Saints scored three in the second and two in the third to take a 5-1 lead, Marshall delivered for Augsburg once again in the top of the sixth with another RBI single that scored Carter Peterson (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) to cut the deficit to three.
• St. Scholastica put together a strong bottom half of the sixth, scoring six runs to take a commanding 12-2 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game.
• Marshall was the lone Auggie with multiple hits in game one, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. Gage registered Augsburg's only extra-base hit with a double in the first.
Myer Schmitz (JR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) started the game on the mound and was ultimately charged with the loss, giving up seven hits and four earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.

GAME TWO: ST. SCHOLASTICA 10, AUGSBURG 8
• After the Saints scored a pair of runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead, the Auggies evened the game with a two-run second inning with RBI singles from Peterson and Stanley Regguinti (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS).
• The Saints would go on to add a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to restore their lead, but Regguinti answered the call for the Auggies once again with a double to left field that scored two runners in the fourth inning to tie the game at four each.
• The trend continued for the Saints with yet another two-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Augsburg managed to cut the deficit to a single run in the top of the fifth when Austin Lang (SO, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) singled to right center field to score Gage.
• Following a two-run homer by St. Scholastica in the fifth to make it 8-5, the Auggies rallied in the sixth with a three-run inning to tie the game for the third time with runs scoring off the bats of Gage, Marshall, and Lang.
• The Saints would add two runs in the eighth to capture the lead for what proved to be the final time. The Auggies threatened in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases with just one out, but the Saints managed to record the final two outs to seal the tight win.
• Both offenses were active in game two, with Augsburg managing 15 hits while St. Scholastica finished with 17. Regguinti, Gage, Jenkins, and Vela each had three-hit games for the Auggies with Regguintni going 3-for-4 with a double three RBI, and a run scored and Gage finishing 3-for-6 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Jake Pittelkow (SO, Roseville, Minn./Simley HS) started the game on the mound for Augsbug, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts in four full innings of work. Vincent Rupp (SO, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) pitched the final four innings and was charged with the loss, allowing six hits and four earned runs with a strikeout.

FOR THE FOES
• Adam Braun had a strong afternoon at the plate for the Saints, going 6-for-9 with a double, two RBI, and four runs scored.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will travel south for a MIAC doubleheader at Saint Mary's University on Tuesday, April 9 with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 pm.
