WINONA, Minn. – The Augsburg University baseball team continued Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a midweek doubleheader at Saint Mary's University on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a pair of one-run games to the Cardinals.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Saint Mary's 2, Augsburg 1; Saint Mary's 3, Augsburg 2
LOCATION: Winona, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-17 overall (0-8 MIAC), Saint Mary's 14-8 overall (7-1 MIAC)
GAME ONE: SAINT MARY'S 2, AUGSBURG 1
• As he has done many times already this season,
Adam Marshall (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) batted in the first run of the game with an RBI single to right field that scored
Stanley Regguinti (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) in the top of the first.
• The Cardinals answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, going on to score what would prove to be the winning run in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1.
•
Austin Lang (SO, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) put together a strong outing on the mound for the Auggies, pitching all six innings and allowing just seven hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, with three strikeouts.
• Marshall was the only Auggie with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Lance Nayman (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) had the lone extra-base hit with a double in the seventh.
GAME TWO: SAINT MARY'S 3, AUGSBURG 2
• After the Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Auggies responded in the top of the third when
Ty Gage (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) doubled to right field, scoring Regguinti to even the game at 1-1.
• The Cardinals regained the lead for what proved to be the final time in the seventh inning with a single up the middle that scored two runners. A sacrifice fly from
Andruw Vela (FY, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) in the eighth cut the deficit to single run, but that proved to be all the offense the Auggies would find as the Cardinals hung on for the 3-2 win.
•
Jake Skogrand (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was effective in his six innings of work on the mound, allowing just six hits and one earned run while fanning seven batters.
Vincent Rupp (SO, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) was charged with the loss, giving up three hits and two earned runs in one inning pitched.
Sean Littmann (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) pitched the final inning for the Auggies, allowing just one hit and holding the Cardinals scoreless.
• Regguinti and Gage each finished 2-for-4 in the game while Lang,
Drew Jenkins (SO, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS), and
Josh Udelhofen (JR, Janesville, Minn./Janesville Craig HS) had one hit each.
