MINNEAPOLIS -- With a dominant performance in all aspects of the game, the Augsburg University men's soccer team scored a 2-0 nonconference victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Wisconsin-Whitewater 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 5-1-1 overall, UW-Whitewater 3-2-1 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies took charge early and prevented UW-Whitewater from establishing any momentum in the game until the closing minutes. The Auggies dominated possession, with a 63-to-37-percent advantage, and outshot the Warhawks by a 22-13 margin. UW-Whitewater was held without a shot on-goal until the 70th minute. The Augsburg defensive backfield of
Jakob Mohrlok (SR, Stuttgart, Germany/Schonbuch Gymnasium HS) and
Jeffrey Richter (JR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS), who both played the full 90 minutes, were particularly stout in keeping the Warhawks from mounting many scoring opportunities.
•
Mitchel Munzing (JR, Portland, Ore./Grant HS), who claimed a hat trick in the Auggies' 7-1 win over Crown on Wednesday, opened the scoring for Augsburg with a goal in the sixth minute, taking a through ball from
Mizael Harris (JR, Happy Valley, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) and driving into the 18-yard box, escaping a wall of defenders and sliding a shot past a charging goalkeeper and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
• The Auggies added to the lead in the 60th minute, when Mohrlok flicked a corner kick by
Diego Veit (JR, Vina Del Mar, Chile/Centro Educational de Adultos Rafael Sotomayor) at the left edge of the net, and Richter deflected it in for his first goal of the year.
• Augsburg had nine shots on-goal among its 22 shots.
• In addition to Richter and Mohrlok, two other Auggie field players played the full 90 minutes --
Remus Repcak (SO, Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) and
Ceazar Daniell (JR, Portland, Ore./Cleveland HS).
•
Frankie Pinto (FY, Chicago, Ill./Maine South HS) claimed his second shutout of the season in goal, with three saves.
FOR THE FOES
• Matthew Vollmer had five saves in 62 minutes in goal for UW-Whitewater, with Jonathan Fenton claiming two saves in 28 minutes.
• The Warhawks' best chance at scoring came in the 85th minute, when a shot by Aidian Martin hit the crossbar and a rebound shot by Sam Bilyk went just wide left.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That was a thorough performance on both sides of the ball. We used our possession to pin them back and prevent the onslaught of long throws and set pieces, and when they had them our guys did a great job of protecting the goal."
• "We know we have more to give and can improve, as we left goals out there and had one silly moment in the back that we escaped. We need to raise the temp with which we play for more certainty -- and because it's fun."
• "Mitch should be in consideration for the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week after the past few days. He scores three in 20 minutes after physics lab on Wednesday, and then grabs the early game-winner here tonight. He is just getting his engine going -- he's willing to do the work to be better.
• "Jeffrey and Jakob were strong tonight with their responsibility and leadership and both contributed to our attack, and I can't say enough about Remus and Ceazar and how much they give for the group."
• "The real season begins Tuesday night, so we need to recover, get some guys back healthy, and continue to work as hard as we can on us."
