Late goal gives Auggies tie at Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. -- A sliding goal by Denise Hamdan (SO, Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) with 7:26 remaining in the second half gave the Augsburg University women's soccer team a 1-1 tie with host Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Saint Mary's 1
LOCATION: Ochrymowycz Field, Winona, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-2-2 overall (0-0-2 MIAC), Saint Mary's 3-2-2 overall (0-1-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg surrendered a goal in the 18th minute, but tied the game in the 83rd minute on Hamdan's fourth goal of the season. Jayla Ponce (SR, Kuna, Idaho/Kuna HS) drove down the left wing and put in a centering pass, which Megan Hensel (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) flicked at the left post through the goal mouth to a sliding Hamdan, who tapped the ball into the net against the right post.
• Saturday's game proved to be a defensive battle, with both teams only registering six shots each. The teams were near-even on possession, and the Cardinals had five corner kicks to Augsburg's two. The Cardinals had three shots on-goal, compared to two for the Auggies -- the goal by Hamdan and a shot by Grace Dickerson (JR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS).
• Hensel, Dickerson, Hannah Hatfield (JR, Rogers, Ark./Rogers HS) and Annika Rudolph (SR, Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) played the full 90 minutes, with Avery Rich (FY, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) playing 83 minutes and Phoebe Alva Rosa (JR, Jackson, Wyo./Jackson Hole HS) playing 79 minutes.
Tess Enlow (JR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) had two saves in goal to claim the tie.
