Another hat trick for Munzing in Auggie win

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second time in 11 days, Mitchel Munzing (JR, Portland, Ore./Grant HS) claimed a hat trick for the Augsburg University men's soccer team, figuring in the scoring in five of the six goals in the Auggies' 6-2 nonconference win over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Sunday at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 6, Wisconsin-River Falls 2
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-1-1 overall, UW-River Falls 2-4-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Like his previous hat trick this season, in the Auggies' 7-1 win over Crown on Sept. 11, Munzing scored all three of his goals in the second half -- scoring from Jacob Thao (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and Anson Karn (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) on consecutive goals in the 48th and 52nd minutes, and scoring from Christopher Plaza (FY, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) in the 73rd minute. Munzing has now scored goals in six consecutive games, and now has three career hat tricks.
Tomas Menna (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) opened the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute, assisted by Thao and Munzing, his fourth goal of the season.
Owen Salzwedel (SO, St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) scored following a steal in the 18-yard box in the 21st minute.
• Augsburg capped its scoring in the 85th minute, with Plaza's second goal of the season, assisted by Salzwedel and Munzing.
• Augsburg was missing several players due to illness, but still had 18 players see game action. The Auggies outshot the Falcons by a 25-17 margin, including an 11-9 advantage in shots on-goal.
Frankie Pinto (FY, Chicago, Ill./Maine South HS) had two saves in goal the second half, and Luke Omodt (SR, St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) had five saves in the second half.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Munzing has now scored 10 goals with five assists for 25 points in the last six games for the Auggies. He leads the MIAC with 10 goals and 26 points, and stands second in the conference with six assists.

FOR THE FOES
• Ben Harris scored a pair of goals in a 1:41 span for UW-RIver Falls in the second half, both assisted by Landon Christiansen.
• Alvaro Boned had five saves in goal for the Falcons.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "Mitch continues to be our spark, contributing to goals in many different ways. We were shy a few players tonight, and he pulled us through. We were able to get a lot of guys some minutes, Anson earned his first collegiate point with a good assist, we had two high quality goals, and no one got hurt in the end."
• "Other than that, we move on to play a top 10 team in UW-Eau Claire Saturday night so we will see how we stack up."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a nonconference contest next Saturday (9/28) at 7 p.m. in Eau Claire, Wis.
