Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Auggie men edged by No. 10-ranked Blugolds

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Wisconsin-Eau Claire 2, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Simpson Field, Eau Claire, Wis.
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-2-1 overall, UW-Eau Claire 7-1-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Daniell scored his second goal of the season in the 21st minute, taking a feed from Tomas Menna (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) at 40 yards out, working his way between a couple of Blugold defenders and firing a left-footed shot over the top of the leaping goalkeeper to the top left corner of the net.
• UW-Eau Claire, ranked No. 10 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, tied the game on a scramble in the six-yard box in the 37th minute, then scored on a header following a corner kick in the 85th minute.
• The Blugolds claimed a 59-to-41-percent advantage in possession and outshot the Auggies by a 31-4 margin, including a 15-1 advantage in shots on-goal.
• Frankie Pinto (FY, Chicago, Ill./Maine South HS) had his first double-digit save effort of his young career in goal, with 12 saves.

FOR THE FOES
• Owen Backus scored in the 37th minute, and Carson Kowalski scored in the 85th minute for the Blugolds.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We got beaten by a very good Eau Claire team tonight. We got pummeled in the air and on second balls and spent most of the game defending. It was a matter of time before their long throws and corner kicks broke us. We did very well to make them work for it, but in the end they were better on the day."
• "Ceazar scored a gem to get it started and we had them pinned back for chunks of time in the first half. That performance gave us a chance, and we looked like we were going to get points. In the second half, we got in our own way a bit and gave away the ball cheaply in bad spots. That led to their dead-ball moments, and eventually the final goal."
• "Joseph Swallen was outstanding for us today. He was everywhere on both sides of the ball. On Wednesday, we will need that again and some more from the entire team to get by a dangerous Saint John's team."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Saint John's in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Wednesday (10/2) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
