Auggies split matches on day one of home tournament

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University volleyball team opened up play at its own Augsburg Invitational on Friday afternoon, topping George Fox University in five sets before falling to Wartburg University, also in five sets.

THE BASICS 

FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, George Fox 2 (25-13, 27-25, 29-31, 19-25, 15-9); Wartburg 3, Augsburg 2 (25-17, 25-13, 20-25, 22-25, 15-3)
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-3 overall, Wartburg 4-1 overall, George Fox 2-4 overall

AUGSBURG 3, GEORGE FOX 2 
• The Auggies dominated the first set, closing on a six-point run to claim a 25-13 win. Set two proved to be much closer, but the Auggies managed to secure a 27-25 win.
• After the Bruins took sets three and four to send the match to a decisive fifth set, the Auggies used a five-point run to break a 5-5 tie on the way to a 15-9 win to take the match 3-2.
• Augsburg was the more efficient team of the two, hitting .235 while George Fox hit just .180.
Bri Van Well (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) led the way for the Auggie attack with 15 kills on a .217 percentage while Elizabeth Oster (SO, Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) was extremely efficient, hitting .600 and finishing with 13 kills to go along with four block assists. Taylor Hoehns (JR, Cedar Falls, Iowa/Dike-New Hartford HS) was also in double figures with 10 kills.
• Libero Torrie Rehder (SR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) anchored the back row with 25 digs and six set assists.

WARTBURG 3, AUGSBURG 2
• The Knights got off to a hot start, dominating the first two sets to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Auggies stormed back with 25-20 and 25-22 victories in sets three and four, but Wartburg went on to take the fifth set 15-3 to win the match 3-2.
• Van Well finished the match with 17 kills on a .180 hitting percentage while Rehder tallied 18 digs.

FOR THE FOES
• Emerson Kracht logged a 17-kill, 10-dig double-double for the Knights.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 pm in the final day of the Augsburg Invitational.
