Schulte scores twice, Auggies open with 4-1 win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Aunna Schulte (SO, Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield East HS) scored a pair of second-period goals, leading the No. 2-ranked Augsburg University women's hockey team to a 4-1, season-opening nonconference win over No. 9-ranked Adrian College on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 4, Adrian (Mich.) 1
LOCATION: Ed Saugestad Rink, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 1-0-0 overall, Adrian 0-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Schulte scored a pair of goals in a 3:08 span -- her second career multi-goal game -- midway through the second period. Her first goal came on a rebound in the slot off a shot from the point by Nora Stepan (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS), with Jenna Allen (SO, Minnetonka, Minn./Holy Family Catholic HS) tapping the puck in the scramble in front.
• Schulte's second goal came following a sprint up the ice by Ella Olson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS), as she put home a rebound off a wrap-around shot by Olson.
• The Auggies' first goal of the season came late in the first period, as Allen pounced on a puck on a scramble in front, with Ruby Eskin (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Roseville HS) assisting.
• Adrian got a goal back at the 18:37 mark of the second period, but Augsburg grabbed a three-goal advantage just 1:04 later, as Annika Mielke (SO, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) scored a power-play goal on the rebound of a Stepan shot, which Kate Haug (SR, Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) touched in front.
• Augsburg, ranked No. 2 in the preseason NCAA Division III national polls by both USCHO.com and D-III Hockey News, peppered the Adrian goal with 40 shots, compared to 21 for the visiting Bulldogs, ranked No. 9 in both national preseason polls.
• Marissa Paaske (SR, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central HS) had 20 saves in goal for the Auggies.
