Auggies pull away in 2nd half to top Oles

MINNEAPOLIS -- Outscoring the visitors by a 35-10 margin in the second half, the Augsburg University football team scored a 44-13 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over St. Olaf College on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg led 9-3 at halftime in a tight contest, but pulled away in the second half, outgaining the Oles by a 302-162 margin, including a 157-39 margin in a fourth quarter in which the Auggies scored 21 unanswered points. The Auggies ended up outgaining the Oles by a 486-to-280 margin in the game.
• Quarterback Caden Rodkewich (JR, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) had one of the best games of his collegiate career, completing 26-of-41 passes for 314 yards with four touchdowns against no interceptions. He completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Wilson (SR, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) in the first quarter and a 14-yard scoring pass to Michael Lau (SR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) in the third quarter. 
• On a second-down-and-35 play from the Augsburg 33-yard line in the fourth quarter after a 20-yard loss on a high snap and a delay of game penalty, Rodkewich completed a 67-yard touchdown pass to Kobey Sandifer-Howze (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS), giving the Auggies a 30-13 lead.
• The Auggies capped the scoring with a pair of touchdowns in the final four minutes -- a 21-yard pass from Rodkewich to Wilson, and a 23-yard rushing score by Avian Atkins (SO, St. Paul, Minn./White Bear Lake HS).
Omar Madkour (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored on an 80-yard touchdown rush late in the third quarter.
• Two of Augsburg's three interceptions of St. Olaf quarterbacks set up Auggie scores -- an interception and 39-yard return to the Ole 14-yard line by Foster Mulvehill (JR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) set up Rodkewich's touchdown pass to Lau on the next play, and a pickoff and 33-yard return to the Ole 11 by RJ Chakolis (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Hopkins HS) set up Atkins' rushing score three plays later.
Rashad Sherwood (JR, Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had an interception that stalled an Ole drive at the Auggie 37-yard line late in the second quarter.
• Wilson caught 11 passes for 93 yards, Lau caught eight passes for 68 yards, and Sandifer-Howze caught two passes for 106 yards.
• Madkour rushed four times for 84 yards, while Derrick Sando (FY, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) rushed nine times for 45 yards.
Nathan Wangensteen (SR, Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm HS) connected on a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter.
• Defensively Sherwood had 10 tackles (five solo), with Javan Harvey (JR, Mahtomedi, Minn./Hamtomedi HS) claiming 10 tackles (nine solo).
• Chakolis had six tackles, and Anselmo Marquez-Reagan Jr. (JR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had five tackles (two solo).

FOR THE FOES
• St. Olaf quarterback Luke Crosby completed 14-of-39 passes for 185, with Will Skemp catching six passes for 86 yards and Tory Pinkney Jr. catching five passes for 77 yards.
• Gus Gartzke rushed 15 times for 44 yards and a three-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
• Tony Avila-Tovalin, Carter Olson, Toby Kahl and Alec Mahoney had six tackles each for the Oles.
