Auggies pull away in 2nd half for opening win

MINNEAPOLIS -- On her 22nd birthday, Wakinyela Bear (SR, Morrison, Colo./Meskwaki (Iowa) HS) scored 10 of her 14 points in a 17-2 run to open the second half, as the Augsburg University women's basketball opened its season with a 69-48 victory over Martin Luther College on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 24-24 at halftime, the Auggies used a 17-2 run over the opening 4:35 of the third quarter to take a 41-26 advantage, and the lead did not dip below nine points the rest of the way. Augsburg led by as many as 26 points late in the game.
• Bear scored 14 points with seven rebounds, four steals and two assists for the Auggies.
• Saylor Gallagher (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) led the Auggies, scoring 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. She added eight rebounds and an assist.
• Playing in her first game as an Auggie after transferring from Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Sydney Hazuga (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) scored 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, adding three rebounds and two steals.
• Amira LaDuke (SR, Cass Lake, Minn./Cass Lake-Bena HS) scored 10 points with four assists and three rebounds.
• Melanie Delestrez (JR, Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) had 10 rebounds, and Tyliah Frazier (FY, Fridley, Minn./Fridley HS) had four assists.
 
FOR THE FOES
• Martin Luther was led by Mya Morris, who scored 19 points with six rebounds and two assists.
• Wilhelmina Wenz had eight points with four points and four assists.
