Auggies close unbeaten regular season with 39-10 win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Finishing the regular season with its most dual-meet victories since the 2001-02 campaign, the Augsburg University men's wrestling team improved to 16-0 with a 39-10 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The No. 3-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III tournament national poll and No. 1-ranked team in the NWCA Division III dual-meet poll, Augsburg claimed victories in seven of the eight competitive bouts in the dual, with six wins coming by bonus-point margins.
• Augsburg scored three pins in the dual. No. 3-ranked 197-pounder Parker Venz (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) claimed his 55th career pin, improving to 16-4 on the season by converting a solid cradle into a 1:15 pin of Dante Novembre. Venz now has eight pins, two technical falls and a major decision among his 16 victories, and is now 85-32 in his collegiate career.
• At 157, No. 6-ranked Karsen Otis (SO, Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly HS) used a back cradle with seven seconds left in the second period to put his opponent in danger, claiming a pin with one second left in the frame to improve to 19-5 on the season. Otis earned his fourth pin of the year and his 13th bonus-point victory (four pins, seven technical falls, two major decisions).
• No. 6-ranked 174-pounder Seth Goetzinger (SR, Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield HS) turned a disadvantage into an advantage, sitting up and converting a front headlock on the edge of the mat into a reversal and a 3:29 pin of Concordia's Zach Pribyl. Goetzinger is now 18-3 on the season with six pins, three technical falls and two major decisions. He is 89-24 in his career with 43 pins.
• Chance Suddeth (SO, Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton HS), ranked No. 15 at 133 pounds, used four takedowns and 1:56 riding time to score a 15-5 major decision of Kie Anderson, improving to 23-6 on the season.
• No. 6-ranked 149-pounder Matthew Randolph (FY, Jordan, Minn./Jordan HS (Scott West)) scored a 13-1 major decision of Jack Major, claiming two takedowns, a reversal, a four-point near-fall and 4:08 of riding time. Randolph is now 24-2 on the season.
• At 184, No. 4-ranked Brandt Bombard (JR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) scored a 12-0 major decision of Brody Duke, with three takedowns and 2:09 riding time.
Tyler Raway (SR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) improved to 19-6 on the season with an 8-2 win over Mason Swanson.

FOR THE FOES
• Concordia's lone competitive win came at 141 pounds, as No. 7-ranked Ty Bisek improved to 20-1 with a 10-0 win over Augsburg's Cole Becker (JR, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS).

• Augsburg honored its 14 seniors before the dual meet -- Goetzinger, Kaczrowski, Raway, Venz, Austin Gabbert (SR, Lester Prairie, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS), Hunter Gorecki (SR, Foley, Minn./Foley HS), Blake Jagodzinske (SR, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS), Moses Madimba (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS), Thomas Oswald (SR, Osceola, Wis./Osceola HS), Lukas Paulson (SR, Becker, Minn./Becker HS), Jagger Schack (SR, Osseo, Minn./Osseo HS),Max Sokolski (SR, Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel HS), Carter Sorenson (SR, Lengby, Minn./Fosston HS) and Charlie Stuhl (SR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS).
• The Auggies' 16 dual-meet victories are its most since the 2001-02 national championship season, when the Auggies also went 16-0. It's the Auggies' 12th unbeaten full season (non-COVID-19) in school history and the first since the 2009-10 national championship campaign, when the Auggies went 12-0.
• Augsburg is now 32-3 in the all-time series with Concordia, dating to the 1966-67 season.
• Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 387-58-1 in dual meets since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just 54 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.
• Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 371-57-1 since the 1979-80 season. Since 1989-90, Augsburg is 296-47-1 against Division III opponents.
• Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is 218-7 since the 1975-76 season.

• Augsburg will attempt to qualify individuals for the NCAA Division III National Championships, hosting the Upper Midwest Regional on Feb. 28 and March 1 at Si Melby Hall. Action begins at 11 a.m. each day.
