Auggie baseball drops series opener at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Surrendering the lead with a six-run fourth inning by the hosts, the Augsburg University baseball team dropped an 8-4 nonconference game at the University of Dubuque in the opener of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but Dubuque sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then added two more runs in the fifth. Augsburg cut the lead to 8-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.
• Stanley Regguinti (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) led off the game with a single, stole second base and came around to score on an Andruw Vela (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) RBI single.
Tyson LaPoint (SO, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) led off the second inning with a double, and came home on an infield single by Davis Wick (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS).
• A Keegan O'Connor (SR, Roselle, Ill./James B. Conant HS) single in the top of the ninth plated Vela and pinch-runner Elijah Stewart (FY, Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS).
Manny Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) started on the mound for the Auggies, striking out three against two walks and five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Austin Lang (JR, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) had a strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief, with Michael Hesse (FY, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) pitching two scoreless innings with a strikeout.

FOR THE FOES
• Tyson Dent went 2-for-5 for Dubuque, hitting a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Micah O'Neal went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
• Aidan Elfering pitched a complete-game victory, striking out 11 against no walks.

UP NEXT
• The teams complete the nonconference series with a doubleheader on Saturday (3/29) in Dubuque. The start time has been moved up to 12 p.m., due to weather concerns.
