Auggies score doubleheader sweep of Cougars

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University baseball team claimed a walkoff win in the eighth inning of the first game, then used strong pitching performances in the second game to score a nonconference doubleheader sweep of the University of Minnesota Morris on Thursday afternoon.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggies gained the win in the bottom of the eighth inning in the back-and-forth game. Leadoff hitter Elijah Stewart (FY, Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Jenkins (JR, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS), and scored on a single by Jorda Sivoravong (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS).
• The top third of Augsburg's order collected six of the team's seven hits in the game, with Stanley Regguinti (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS), Sivoravong and Andruw Vela (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) each going 2-for-4. Regguinti and Sivoravong hit back-to-back doubles to open the game, bringing in a run, and Adam Marshall (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) drove in the second run of the game on a fielder's choice.
• Regguinti hit a one-out triple to center in the fifth inning, and after a Sivoravong walk, Josh Udelhofen (SR, Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) hit a two-run double to give the Auggies a 4-3 lead.
• The Cougars tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth, but Augsburg took the lead back, as a sacrifice fly by Jenkins plated pinch-runner Davis Wick (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS). UM Morris tied the game with an unearned run in the seventh, forcing extra innings.
Myer Schmitz (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) started on the mound for Augsburg and struck out two against three walks in three innings of work. Vincent Rupp (JR, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) struck out one in three innings of relief, and Caleb Tays (SO, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) had three strikeouts in two innings of relief to gain the win.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
Dylan Adams (SR, Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prepatory School) and Manny Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) combined for an impressive pitching effort in the second game, with Adams striking out two against no walks and three hits in the first four innings to get the win, and Weiss pitching three innings of two-hit relief, striking out two, to earn the save.
• Regguinti hit a leadoff double to start the second game, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vela.
Aaron Jones (SO, Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) led off the fourth inning with a towering home run to left field, his first collegiate round-tripper.
• Stewart had two of Augsburg's five hits in the second game.

FOR THE FOES
• Tyler Motley went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the first game for UM Morris. He also drove in the Cougars' lone run in the second game.
• Ryan McGie went 2-for-3 for the Cougars in the second game.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg is scheduled to travel to Indianola, Iowa, for a three-game series at Simpson College, with a single game on Saturday (3/8) at 2 p.m., and a doubleheader on Sunday (3/9) at 12 p.m.
