Auggies shine in sweep of Scots

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball team benefited from effective pitching and some timely hitting to claim a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Macalester College on Thursday, winning 5-1 and 6-3 at Parade Stadium

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
Vincent Rupp (JR, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) had a strong performance in delivering Augsburg's first complete-game pitching victory of the season, striking out six against two walks and seven hits in seven innings of work. He threw 114 pitches in the win, with 73 strikes.
• Trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Auggies scored five runs in their final three innings. Andruw Vela (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) led off the fourth inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, then scored on a groundout by  Josh Udelhofen (SR, Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS).
• The Auggies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Aaron Jones (SO, Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) led off the inning with a double, and scored as Drew Jenkins (JR, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS) singled and advanced on an error. Stanley Regguinti (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jenkins, and after Jorda Sivoravong (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) reached base on a single and stole second, Vela brought him home on an RBI single.
• Pinch runner Jimmy Hemera (SR, Christchurch, New Zealand/Hillmorton HS) came home on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to cap the Auggie scoring.
• Vela, Jenkins and Elijah Stewart (FY, Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS) had two hits each for the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Falling behind 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Augsburg responded with a five-run bottom of the sixth, sending nine batters to the plate. Jones started the rally by reaching base on an error to plate Udelhofen, and Jenkins pulled off a successful squeeze bunt to drive home Elijah Stewart (FY, Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS). Hubbard hit a two-run double to bring home Jones and Jenkins, and he came home on an RBI single by Regguinti.
• The Auggies added an insurance run in the seventh, as Jenkins hit a two-out RBI single to bring home Stewart.
• Making his first collegiate start in his fifth appearance, Michael Hesse (FY, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) struck out three against two walks, five hits and no runs in five innings of work. Myer Schmitz (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) pitched in relief in the sixth, and Caleb Tays (SO, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) claimed a three-inning save, striking out three against a walk, two hits and a run.

FOR THE FOES
• Raymond McCaskey had two hits in the first game for Macalester, and Josh Planko drove in the Scots' run with an RBI single in the first inning.
• Nathan Gumagay went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the second game.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Gustavus Adolphus College in an MIAC doulbleheader on Saturday (4/12) at 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
