Softball splits wild doubleheader with Royals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Morgann Paaske (SR, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central HS) threw a complete-game victory in the first game, and went 4-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader, leading the Augsburg University softball team in a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill with Bethel University on Tuesday afternoon.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Paaske struck out two against two walks and nine hits in the complete-game pitching victory in the first game, her 16th complete game in her 23 appearances (18 starts) this season.She threw 107 pitches to earn the win, of which 65 were strikes.
• Torrie Rehder (SR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) sparked the Auggies in the third inning, hitting her fifth home run of the season, a towering blast to deep center field.
• The Auggies added a run in the sixth inning. Paaske led off the inning with her second hit of the game, a double to right-center, and Lola Pilon (SO, Farmington, Minn./Mounds Park Academy HS) brought her home with a double, again to right-center. 
• Jayden Evenson (JR, Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee HS) and Olivia Funk (SR, Lewiston, Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS) also had base hits in the game for the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg fell behind 9-0 after the first two-and-a-half innings, as the Royals scored a run in the first, two runs in the second and six runs in the third -- sending 11 batters to the plate in the third.
• But Augsburg mounted a rally in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs, and scored three runs again in the fourth inning to trim the lead to 9-6. But the Auggies stranded 11 runners on-base in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings.
• Evenson led off the third inning with a walk, and after Rehder singled and Megan Gissler (SO, Louisville, Neb./Louisville HS) reached base on an error, Paaske hit an RBI single to drive in Evenson. Pilon plated Rehder on an RBI groundout, and Zoie Johnson (SR, Carlton, Minn./Esko HS) drove home Gissler on an RBI single.
• In the fourth, Jaime Olson (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) led off the inning with a single and scored on a Gissler RBI single. Paaske drove in Evenson on a single, and Johnson drove in Gissler on a bases-loaded walk.
• Funk, Zoe Adkins (JR, Homer, Alaska/Homer HS) and Paaske pitched in the second game for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Dominique Walicke pitched a complete game in the first contest, with five strikeouts against two walks, and claimed a three-inning save in the second game. She struck out seven against four walks for the Royals in the doubleheader, throwing 167 pitches (104 strikes).
• Julia Helget hit three doubles in four at-bats for the Royals in the second game, scoring two runs and driving in one. Sidney Bartels hit two doubles, driving in two runs.
