Auggies set home run mark in split with Wildcats

MINNEAPOLIS -- Zoie Johnson (SR, Carlton, Minn./Esko HS) and Lola Pilon (SO, Farmington, Minn./Mounds Park Academy HS) smacked long home runs for Augsburg University, as the Auggies set a single-season school record for home runs as a team in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader split with St. Catherine University on Friday.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
Morgann Paaske (SR, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central HS) pitched her third shutout ouf the season and 17th complete game in her 19th start, striking out two against no walks and five hits. She only had to throw 78 pitches (49 strikes) in 7.0 innings.
• Pilon drove in Jaime Olson (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, and Johnson smacked her fourth home run of the season in the third inning, a two-run blast to center field.
• Augsburg added another run in the fifth inning, as Paaske led off the frame with a walk, and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Grace Syson (SR, Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes Academy HS).
Torrie Rehder (SR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) hit a double for the Auggies in the first game, and Pilon, Paaske and Olivia Hennager (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) also had base hits.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored its lone runs in the second inning, as Pilon led off the inning with her fifth home run, a towering shot to right field. Johnson doubled to center and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Syson.
• St. Catherine had 13 hits off of two Augsburg pitchers, and took advantage of three Auggie errors in the game. The Wildcats scored a run in the first, two runs in the second, three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth, enabling them to end the game via the NCAA eight-run rule after five innings.
• Johnson had two of Augsburg's five hits in the game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the two home runs on Friday, Augsburg set a new single-season school record for home runs as a team. The Auggies now have 23 homers, breaking the old record of 22, set in 2011.
• Augsburg honored its six seniors in a ceremony after the game -- Hennager, Johnson,Paaske, Rehder, Syson and Olivia Funk (SR, Lewiston, Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS)

FOR THE FOES
• Mayci Larson and Faith Bonse hit home runs in the second game for St. Catherine.
• Alexa Carlstrom struck out five against one walk in the second-game victory for the Wildcats, throwing 77 pitches (50 strikes).

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts No. 13-ranked Saint Mary's University in a MIAC doubleheader on Saturday (4/26) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
