HOW IT HAPPENED
After Northwestern went ahead 2-1 in the opening set, the Auggies put together the first push, using two
Lilly Wynn kills, a block by
Ameerah Rogers and
Taliah Triggs and a
Lola Pilon ace to move in front 6-3. Rogers has recorded three or more total blocks in six consecutive matches. The Eagles later ran off four straight points to lead 11-9, but Augsburg answered with an
Ava Carlson ace to tie it and then, after an Anja Jarchow kill, used a
Gwynn Gorter/Wynn block, a
Maggie Lile ace and two errors to go up 15-12. The home team responded with six straight points, including blocks involving Abbie Brand and an Alana Costello ace, before the Auggies drew even at 18-18 on two Pilon aces and briefly moved ahead 20-19 on a Northwestern attack error. After the set was tied 21-21 on a
Marley Mitchell kill, the Eagles scored the final four points to close the set 25-21.
Northwestern built a 12-7 lead in the second set on Norah Jaeb's kill, but Augsburg worked back into the set when a service error, an Ana Egge attack error and
Taliah Triggs' kill from
Jovial King cut the margin to 13-11. After the Eagles moved back ahead 18-13 on Egge's service ace, the Auggies responded with kills from Rogers and Mitchell, then later pulled within 19-18 on a Northwestern attack error.
Lola Pilon's kill kept Augsburg within 20-19, but the Eagles scored the next four points behind a Jaeb kill, two Miranda Wyatt kills and a Grace Moravchik ace to reach 24-19.
Gwynn Gorter put down a kill for Augsburg before Wyatt closed the set for Northwestern, 25-20.
Northwestern opened the third set with four straight points before
Gwynn Gorter put Augsburg on the board with a kill, and a block by Triggs and Rogers later helped the Auggies pull within 5-3. After the Eagles moved ahead 8-5, Triggs added a kill and Augsburg benefited from an attack error to close the gap to 8-7, but kills by Anna Olsen and Emma Sip pushed the home side back to a 10-7 edge. King served an ace during another Augsburg push that cut the margin to 12-10, but Northwestern answered with the next two points and later used scoring stretches to build leads of 17-11 and 21-12. Triggs, King and
