Auggies drop 2 close games at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- The Augsburg University baseball team dropped a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to Bethel University at Hargis Park on Wednesday, suffering a 13-8 loss in the first game and a narrow 10-9 defeat in the second.

GAME 1 RECAP
In the first game, the Auggies' offense was highlighted by a six-run sixth inning, but it was not enough to overcome the Royals' seven-run fourth inning. Stanley Regguinti kickstarted Augsburg's scoring in the first inning with a double to right field. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Andruw Vela's sacrifice fly, giving Augsburg a 1-0 lead after the first inning. In the second inning, Stuart Hellie drew a walk and scored on Derek Tomalak's double to left field, extending the Auggies' lead to 2-0. Bethel responded in the third inning, with Chris Cannon doubling to right center to drive in two runs, contributing to a four-run inning. Bethel led 4-2 after three innings.

The Royals extended their lead significantly in the fourth inning with a two-RBI double by Hayden Sperbeck and a grand slam by Seth Nelson, totaling seven runs and propelling Bethel to an 11-2 lead through four innings. The Auggies mounted a comeback in the sixth inning with RBI singles from Andruw Vela and Stuart Hellie, along with additional hits from Regguinti and Vela, scoring six runs to narrow the gap to 13-8. The seventh inning was scoreless, concluding the game with Bethel securing the victory.

Jake Pittelkow pitched 3 innings, allowing 7 earned runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Dylan Waukazo followed with 2/3 of an inning, surrendering 4 earned runs on 2 hits. Baxter Heino contributed 1 1/3 innings, giving up 1 hit, while Noah Stooksbury closed with 1 inning. 

Stanley Regguinti collected three hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Andruw Vela drove in three runs, while Stuart Hellie recorded two runs and two RBIs.

GAME 2 RECAP
In the second game, Augsburg opened the scoring with a solo home run by Stanley Regguinti in the first inning, but Bethel quickly responded to tie the game at 1-1. Augsburg took a brief lead in the third when Stuart Hellie singled to center field, allowing Andruw Vela to score. Bethel countered with an RBI single from Sam Abbas, leveling the score again at 2-2.

The Auggies had a significant five-run inning in the fourth, highlighted by Jorda Sivoravong's two-RBI single and Aaron Jones' two-RBI single, which put Augsburg ahead 7-2. However, Bethel narrowed the gap in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to make it 7-6. The Royals overtook the Auggies in the sixth with two unearned runs, gaining an 8-7 lead. 

Augsburg tied the game again in the seventh with RBI singles from Regguinti and Vela, making it 9-9. However, Seth Nelson's solo homer in the eighth inning gave Bethel a 10-9 lead, which they maintained through the end of the ninth inning.

Vincent Rupp pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 runs, while Jack McCabe and Manny Weiss contributed in relief. 

Stanley Regguinti led in Game 2 with three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Jorda Sivoravong added two hits and two RBIs. Stuart Hellie contributed with three hits and scored once, while Aaron Jones collected two hits and drove in two runs.

UP NEXT
Looking ahead, Augsburg is scheduled to host Gustavus Adolphus College in a MIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m., at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
