Auggies edged twice by Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. -- The Augsburg University baseball team fell to Saint Mary's University in both games of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, losing the first game 4-1 and the second game 7-6.

GAME 1 RECAP
In the first game, the Auggies managed five hits but struck out six times, while Saint Mary's scored three of its four runs in the first inning. Gavin Schulte singled, followed by Alex Hanneman's walk. Reese Berg doubled to right field, driving in Schulte and Hanneman. Dom Najacht added another run with an RBI single, bringing the score to 3-0.

Augsburg responded in the sixth inning. Jorda Sivoravong singled and advanced on a walk to Andruw Vela. Jack Huberty walked, loading the bases. Aaron Jones hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Sivoravong to score. The inning ended with the score at 4-1 in favor of the Cardinals, who added to their lead in the sixth when Najacht reached on an error and scored on Josh Costello's single.

Austin Lang pitched a complete game for the Auggies, going 6 innings while allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits. He issued 4 walks and struck out 9 batters, throwing a total of 90 pitches with 50 of them being strikes. Sivoravong collected two hits, scored a run, and recorded a stolen base, while Vela added a double and drew a walk.

GAME 2 RECAP
In the second game, Augsburg narrowly fell 7-6 to the Cardinals, despite a five-run rally in the eighth inning. Saint Mary's took an early lead in the first inning with an RBI single by Ryan Csida, The Cardinals extended their lead to 2-0 in the sixth as Joe Anderson, who replaced Csida as a pinch runner, scored on a single by Stephen Golden.

The Auggies responded in the seventh inning, with Sivoravong and Vela reaching base. Jack Huberty's groundout brought Sivoravong home, narrowing the deficit to 4-1.The pivotal eighth inning saw Augsburg rally with five runs. Stanley Regguinti's RBI single and walks by Sivoravong and Vela set the stage. Drew Jenkins delivered a two-RBI single, and Aaron Jones' RBI single capped off the inning, giving the Auggies a 6-4 lead. However, Saint Mary's mounted a comeback in the ninth, with Jack Anderson's RBI single and Golden's two-RBI single securing the lead for the Cardinals, concluding the game at 7-6.

Manny Weiss delivered a strong performance for the Auggies, pitching 7 innings with 8 strikeouts, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits. He threw 97 pitches, 59 of which were strikes, and issued 4 walks. Sivoravong scored twice and added two hits, while Vela recorded one hit, drove in a run, and drew two walks. Jenkins collected two RBIs, providing key runs for the team.
