Auggies swept by Johnnies

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball faced a tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint John's (Minn.) (20-12, 10-6) on Saturday at Parade Stadium, suffering a 7–3 loss in the first game followed by a 14-0 defeat in the second.

GAME 1 RECAP
In the first game, the Auggies managed six hits and three runs, all scored in the third inning. Saint John's secured their victory with a pivotal four-run third inning. Notable plays included Owen Amrhein being hit by a pitch and advancing to third, followed by Riley Schwellenbach also being hit by a pitch. Will Koeppen reached on an error, loading the bases. Brendan Hemr singled to score Amrhein, and Alex Matchey contributed with a fielder's choice, scoring Schwellenbach. An RBI groundout by Mason McCurdy and a single from Reed Marquardt brought in two additional runs, putting the Johnnies ahead 4–0 at the end of the third inning.

Augsburg responded in the bottom of the third. Stuart Hellie walked and advanced on an out, while Stanley Regguinti was hit by a pitch. Jorda Sivoravong hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Hellie to score. An error on a pickoff attempt allowed Ethan Hathaway to score, and Andruw Vela's RBI single brought in Regguinti, closing the gap. The inning concluded with Saint John's leading 4–3.

Saint John's added a run in the fourth, with Amrhein singling and scoring on a hit by Koeppen, extending their lead to 5–3. In the fifth inning, McCurdy doubled and scored on a single by Justin Brooks, further stretching the Johnnies' advantage to 6–3. They scored again in the seventh inning, as Zach Helfmann, pinch-hitting, was hit by a pitch and replaced by pinch runner Dawson Franke, who stole second and scored on an Amrhein double, making it 7–3.

Austin Lang pitched a complete game, delivering seven innings for Augsburg University. Despite allowing eight hits and five earned runs, Lang managed to strike out six batters. He issued four walks and hit three batters, while throwing a total of 107 pitches, 70 of which were strikes. Vela recorded two hits and one RBI, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Hellie added a hit and scored a run, showcasing his ability to reach base with a walk. Sivoravong brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, providing a crucial RBI in the lineup.

GAME 2 RECAP
The second game saw Augsburg struggle offensively, managing only three hits and four walks against Saint John's 15 hits and seven walks, leading to a 14-0 defeat. Saint John's started strong in the first inning, scoring four runs. After Brendan Hemr singled and stole second, Alex Matchey walked. Mason McCurdy's single brought home Hemr. Justin Brooks then hit a two-RBI single, and Will Wareham's single added another run, bringing the score to 4-0.

In the second inning, Saint John's added five more runs. After back-to-back singles, Hemr reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Matchey's single brought in another unearned run. Brooks' single and a sacrifice fly by Owen Amrhein increased their lead to 9-0. The third inning saw the Johnnies extend their lead further. Will Koeppen singled, and after a walk, McCurdy's single loaded the bases. Reed Marquardt's two-RBI single and Brooks' sacrifice fly brought the score to 12-0.

Augsburg's defense held Saint John's scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but a wild pitch in the sixth allowed Kyle Boutwell to score, making it 13-0. In the seventh, Sam Garry doubled and scored on Mason DuRose's single, closing the game at 14-0.

Manny Weiss faced challenges on the mound, allowing eight earned runs over 1 inning, with eight hits and one walk, resulting in a loss to bring his season record to 2-2. Nick Allbee contributed 1 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits, also walking two batters. Will Haverly pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, walking four, and striking out three. Nolan Readmond completed 1 1/3 innings of work, yielding one earned run on two hits while striking out one.

Andruw Vela contributed with one hit and drew two walks, showing patience at the plate. Jack Huberty added a hit and reached base on a walk, though he was caught stealing once.

Looking ahead, the Auggies are scheduled to host North Central University (Minn.) in a nonconference doubleheader on Monday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
