MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College athletic department honored the achievement of its student-athletes with the second-annual Auggie Awards ceremony, giving numerous awards to student-athletes and teams on April 19 at the Christensen Center.

Award candidates were determined by Augsburg athletics staff, and a preliminary vote narrowed the initial candidates to four finalists in each individual category. A second vote of the finalists was held by the Augsburg athletics staff, along with members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), to determine the winners in each category. The formal event was co-sponsored by the Augsburg Athletics department and SAAC.

Here are the award-winners in each category given from the 2009 Auggie Awards. Click on the award name for a full listing of the nominees in each category.

… In hockey, Magnuson led the team in every scoring category this season -- nine goals, 10 assists for 19 points … Named to the All-MIAC first team for the fourth straight season, becoming just the second Auggie in the 14-year history of the women's hockey program to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of her four seasons, and one of only three Class of 2009 seniors to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of their four seasons … Sheila Brown Award is given to a senior women's hockey player who has made a long-term contribution to her team's success and who has consistently competed with good sportsmanship, with recipients named to award based on four criteria -- team leadership, sportsmanship and volunteer work, academic excellence and hockey skills/production … Selected as an alternate for the 32-player field to compete at the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held on April 10 at the Men's Division I Frozen Four in Washington, D.C. … In hockey career, had 99 points (65 goals, 34 assists) in 98 career games, finishing in second place in school history in career goals, third in career points and sixth in career assists … In 2008 softball, 1 of only 2 Class of 2009 players to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of their first 3 seasons … In 2008, hit .390 (53-of-136), with six doubles, five triples, two home runs and 12 RBI … Second on the team in batting average, and led the team in both slugging percentage (.551) and on-base percentage (.461), and was 12-of-14 in stolen bases … Played three positions for the Auggies in 2008 -- first base, second base and pitcher -- and committed just four errors in 212 chances for a team-best .981 fielding percentage … Career .379 (132-of-348) hitter with 74 runs scored, 17 doubles, 11 triples, three home runs, 30 RBI, .517 slugging percentage, .446 on-base percentage, 42 stolen bases in 51 attempts … AWHCA National Scholar-Athlete Award in 2007-08

… Goalkeeper … 10-4-4 record in 2008, .893 save percentage, 0.59 goals-against-average … GAA was 30th among D-III goalkeepers … Each of her four seasons have put her in the top-10 categories in single-season wins, goals-against-average, win-loss percentage and shutouts, including a single-season record 10 shutouts in both 2006 and 2008 (most in the MIAC in 2008) … Holds Augsburg career records for goalkeeper wins (37-19-16), career goals-against-average (0.68), shutouts (36) and career win-loss percentage (.627) … 72 career games, 401 saves with an .887 save percentage … Part of a defense that has allowed just 53 goals (0.69 goals-against-average) in her career, along with claiming 37 team shutouts … All-MIAC in 2007, All-MIAC honorable-mention in 2006 and 2005 … All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team in 2006, 2007 and 2008 … Played basketball for first season as reserve forward in 2008-09.

… Won MIAC outdoor title in 100-meter dash (10.97 seconds) and placed 6th in long jump, while finishing 6th in indoor 55-meter dash at MIAC indoor championships … 100-meter title was first MIAC track title for Augsburg men since 2005 and 1 of only 2 MIAC men’s first-year athletes to win titles at MIAC outdoor meet.

… One of just three first-year players to be named All-MIAC … Team-leading .403 batting average, starting all 43 games … 19 runs, 6 doubles, 22 RBI (2nd on team), with .452 slugging percentage, .457 on-base percentage, 11 stolen bases in 14 attempts … 50 hits, 124 at-bats, 104 defensive assists … Ranked 9th in MIAC in overall batting average, 11th in on-base percentage, led MIAC in defensive assists (104).
MALE OUTSTANDING TEAM -- SOCCER
Men's Soccer-09 Auggie Awards
(12-4-7 overall, 7-2-1 MIAC--3rd/11, MIAC playoff runner-up, NCAA tournament third round)
-- Under fifth-year head coach Greg Holker, the Augsburg men's soccer team finished 12-4-7 overall, 7-2-1 in MIAC play, qualifying for the NCAA Division III national playoffs for the first time in school history. The Auggies reached the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA tournament this season, claiming a penalty-kick advancement over Whitworth (Wash.) in the opening round and a 1-0 win at Redlands (Calif.) in the second round before falling 2-1 in two overtimes at Loras (Iowa) in the third round. The Auggies reached the MIAC men's soccer tournament for the second time in the last three seasons, topping Gustavus 3-0 in the semifinals before falling in a penalty-kick shootout to Carleton in the championship game.

(20-23 overall, 15-7 MIAC--4th/12, MIAC playoff qualifier)
-- Under Tim Gormley, in his second year as Augsburg's head coach, the Auggies finished 20-23 overall and 15-7 in MIAC play in 2008, one of the program's most dramatic comeback seasons in school history. After finishing 4-34 last season and starting 4-14 this season, Augsburg won 16 of its final 25 games to reach the 20-win mark for the first time since the 1995 season (20-18) and just the ninth time in the last 30 years (since the 1979 season). Augsburg reached the MIAC postseason playoffs for the first time in the event's five-year history this year, while also reaching the postseason for the first time since 1984. Gormley was named the conference's Coach of the Year in 2008.
MALE MOST IMPROVED TEAM -- GOLF
Men's Golf-09 Auggie Awards
(In 2007, 8th/10 at MIAC championships; In 2008, 3rd/10 at MIAC championships)
-- Under fourth-year head coach Ted Vickerman, the Augsburg men's golf team rebounded from last year's eighth-place finish at the MIAC championships with a third-place finish in this year's conference meet (308-309-305--922), finishing just five strokes behind second-place Gustavus. Augsburg finished with a stroke average of 313.62 and a 52-38 record (.578) against opponents in the fall half of the 2008-09 season. The Auggies had a balanced attack, with six golfers averaging 82.0 strokes or better during the fall half of the campaign.
