Augsburg 35 Carleton 21
It wasn't pretty, but the Auggies were able to hold off the Carleton Knights for a 35-21 Homecoming victory at Anderson-Nelson Field. Augsburg quarterback
Derrin Lamker threw three touchdown passes to wide receiver
Scott Hvistendahl, as the Auggies overcame numourus first-half mistakes for the win. Carleton led the game 14-0 and 21-7 in the first half before Augsburg was able to tie the score at 21-21 just before halftime.
Jason Exley led the defense in the game, ripping off three Carleton passes and breaking up five more. Linebacker
Bob Schultz also played an incredible game. Schultz suffered a concussion early in the game, but continued playing, collecting 13 tackles, breaking up three passes and forcing a fumble. Defensive end
Paul Moore had five tackles, including three for loss and one sack.
The Auggies offense was ineffective in the early part of the game, with dropped passes, fumbles and interceptions. Things turned around however, and Augsburg scored five touchdowns on the day. Running backs
Thane Drier and
Andrew Anthony both scored their first touchdowns of the season on long runs. Anthony went around left end for his 20-yard touchdown, while Drier scored on a 32-yard run, Augsburg's longest run of the year.
The victory moves Augsburg into a second-place tie with St. Thomas in the MIAC with a 5-1 record, Augsburg's best start since 1973. Augsburg travels to St. Peter to battle the 4-2 Gustavus Adolphus Gusties on Saturday in an important conference game.
