St. John's 55, Augsburg 0

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (10/2/99) -- Scoring 21 points in each of the first two quarters, the St. John's University football team quickly turned Saturday's game against Augsburg College into a rout, as the Johnnies cruised to a 55-0 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game before 8,000 people at SJU's Clemons Stadium.

St. John's remains unbeaten with its fourth straight victory and 12th straight in MIAC play dating back to last season, improving to 3-0 in the MIAC with its Homecoming game victory. Augsburg drops its first game of the year and falls to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in the MIAC.

The loss was the first shutout defeat of an Auggie squad since a 28-0 loss to Concordia-Moorhead Nov. 6, 1993 in the Metrodome, and the worst shutout loss since a 62-0 loss at Concordia-Moorhead Nov. 7, 1992. It was St. John's first shutout of the Auggies in the series since a 58-0 triumph at Augsburg on Sept.19, 1992. St. John's has won 18 of the last 19 games in the series, dating back to 1981.

The Johnnies jumped on the Auggies early, and never looked back, taking advantage of six interceptions and returning two of them back for touchdowns. Augsburg could not produce points against a stingy Johnnie defense, who kept the Auggies out of the "red zone" all afternoon. The closest the Auggies could reach in the game was the Johnnie 20-yard line.

Chris Moore (Jr., Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) scored three times for the Johnnies, twice on runs and once on a pass from quarterback Corey Stanger (Jr., Clear Lake, Minn.), making his first career start since coming in on an emergency basis after regular starter Tom Linnemann (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) was injured in last week's Johnnie win at St. Thomas.

Stanger threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more in the game. Moore rushed for 116 yards, marking the fourth game in a row he has gone over the century mark in rushing. Stanger, one of six quarterbacks the Johnnies used in the game, completed 15 of 23 passes for 216 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Johnnies outgained the Auggies by a 420-210 margin in the game, but shut down Augsburg's running game, allowing just 32 net rushing yards by Augsburg. Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) completed 10 of 21 passes for just 96 yards and five interceptions before being pulled in the third quarter. John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.) completed five of his 10 passes, with one pickoff, for 82 yards.

The Johnnies bookended their eight scores with touchdowns on interception returns, one a 43-yarder from Eric Serbus (Sr., Bird Island, Minn./BOLD HS) and a 35-yarder from Brandon Novak (Sr., Becker, Minn.). The Johnnie defense also accounted for five quarterback sacks, three by Beau LaBore (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.).

For Augsburg, Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) led the defense, picking off a pass and accumulating a team-high 10 tackles (six solo). The interception was his first of the season and the 11th of his career, putting him into fourth place in that category in school history. The school record, 17, was set by Jeremy Dalluge from 1992-95.

Chad Olson (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) had nine tackles (one solo), Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had eight tackles (six solo) and Joe Souba (Jr., Hayward, Wis.) had seven tackles (all solo) to pace the Auggie defense.

Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy) led Augsburg's offense with 59 receiving yards on two catches. Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 51 receiving yards on two catches, including a 47-yard scamper in the first half, and also rushed for 30 yards on 15 carries.

Augsburg hosts Gustavus in the Auggies' Homecoming game next Saturday (10/9) at 1 p.m. at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field. St. John's plays at Bethel.

PREGAME NOTES

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (3-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) take on the St. John's University Johnnies (3-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m., at St. John's Clemens Stadium (5,500) in Collegeville, Minn.. St. John's leads the all-time series 51-7-2, dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1926. St. John's has won 17 of the last 18 games in the series, including last year's contest at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field, 19-13.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is in his ninth season and currently has a 43-41 career mark. St. John's head coach John Gagliardi is in his 51st season of collegiate coaching, including 47 at St. John's, and has a career mark of 356-105-11 (332-99-10 at St. John's).

RADIO: All Augsburg football games are aired live on KYCR-AM 1570 in the Twin Cities, with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. LAST WEEK: Both teams remained unbeaten with victories last Saturday. Augsburg scored a 30-27 home win over St. Olaf, while St. John's claimed a 34-18 win at archrival St. Thomas.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg faces its biggest challenge of the season with a game at St. John's, rated fifth in the nation in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III national poll. On top of simply being St. John's, the MIAC's most vaunted team, it's the Johnnies' Homecoming game, and a large crowd (as many as 8,000) is expected to attend. But if you ask Augsburg coach Jack Osberg, it's an opponent the Auggies -- and every other MIAC school -- look forward to playing each year.

"This is a fun week for us," said Osberg. "This is the kind of game you get into coaching to coach. To have a big crowd and a game with a lot of importance in the conference, that's fun. It's an exciting time for our kids, when they get to play a game in a setting like that for their Homecoming. They're are a lot of good things going for us."

The good things mainly revolve around the Auggie offense, which came alive for the first time this season in last week's 30-27 win over St. Olaf. The Auggies put together their best offensive output of the season, 372 yards (297 passing, 90 rushing), and were active in both the rushing and passing games. Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) threw two touchdown passes -- both to Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.), a transfer from Division II South Dakota State -- while running back Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) continued his strong season with a 26-carry, 76-yard, one-touchdown performance.

Tetzloff has a strong corps of players to catch the ball, as seven different receivers have caught passes this season. Johnson's six catches for 133 yards and three TDs leads the team, while Desman Oakley (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) has six catches for 115 yards and a score. Tim Murphy (So., Northfield, Minn./Lakevile HS) has nine catches for 94 yards, fullback John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) has a team-high 12 catches for 86 yards, Warden has four catches for 20 yards, tight end Ryan Hupka (Jr., Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick's HS) has three catches for 56 yards, and Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy), making his first game appearance last week, caught two balls for 53 yards.

"We're spreading the ball around better. Paul's doing a good job of finding the open guy," Osberg said. "We're getting better at taking advantage of what the defense gives us and finding someone open."

Meanwhile, after two strong games to start the season, Augsburg's defense was a little tired in the second half against the Oles, Osberg admitted. Augsburg's defense gave up its most yards of the season to the Oles -- 482 yards (330 passing, 182 rushing) -- but stood firm when it had to, forcing five turnovers and keeping the Oles behind on the scoreboard the entire game.

This week, in order to claim a win over the Johnnies, Osberg said that every segment of the Auggies' game needs to click.

"We have to be more consistent with our play in all parts of the game -- offense, defense and special teams," Osberg said. "Against St. Olaf, the defense had a good first half and the offense had a great second half. We have to do a better job of keeping the flow of the game and the momentum going our way. We have to get everything going together. We've been showing spurts of good play this year. But against the Johnnies, we need to have everybody get together and have a great game."

OPPORTUNISTIC DEFENSE: Augsburg's defense continues to shine this season, especially in the turnover department. The opportunistic Auggie defense has forced 13 opponent turnovers through the first three games -- nine interceptions and four fumbles. Meanwhile, Augsburg has only turned the ball over eight times (five interceptions, three fumbles), giving the team a plus-five turnover ratio -- 26th best in the NCAA Division III national statistics. The nine team interceptions put the Auggies third in the country in total pickoffs, among the 39 teams listed in the turnover margin figures calculated by the NCAA.

Freshman Nate Loughran's (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) four interceptions put him fourth in the nation in that category, according to the NCAA. Meanwhile, senior Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had two pickoffs in last week's win over St. Olaf, giving him three on the season -- good enough to earn a place on this week's Team of the Week honors on the D3football.com web site. Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) and Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) have the other Auggie pickoffs this year.

Augsburg's defense has been strong in pressuring the quarterback, forcing six sacks through the first three games. Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) leads the team in both tackles -- 28 (18 solo) -- and sacks (2.5 for 10 yards lost). Werk has 26 tackles (16 solo), Dane Lund (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) has 23 tackles (eight solo) and free safety Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has 20 tackles (14 solo).

FIRST GAME AT ST. JOHN'S SINCE 1996 -- Saturday's contest will be the first for Augsburg at St. John's since 1996, when the current crop of seniors were freshmen in the Auggie program. The 1996 contest was a dandy, as the Johnnies squeaked by with a 28-20 win. Augsburg had to rally twice from deficits to take the lead in the game, and nearly won it in the waning seconds, but stalled inside the SJU 10-yard line as time ran out. Augsburg has had some success -- albeit limited -- in Collegeville. Since 1960, St. John's has won 17 of the 19 Johnnie-Auggie games played in Collegeville. The Johnnies lead the all-time series 51-7-2, with Augsburg winning just four games over the Johnnies since 1960 -- 19-12 in 1960 at St. John's, 28-20 in 1973 at Augsburg, 21-10 in 1980 at St. John's and 20-10 in 1997 at Augsburg. Prior to 1960, the Auggies had won just three games over the Johnnies, all in a row -- 21-6 in 1927, 24-0 in 1928 and 19-2 in 1929.

The Johnnies have won 11 straight MIAC games, dating back to a 31-27 loss to St. Thomas at the Metrodome in 1997. Since 1981, St. John's is 78-13-2 in home games at Collegeville (including a 6-2 record in postseason playoff games).

SCOUTING THE JOHNNIES: St. John's enters the game with a perfect record, but an imperfect situation at quarterback. All-MIAC starter Tom Linnemann (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) had his career ended prematurely with a broken leg in the first quarter of last week's game at archrival St. Thomas, but coach John Gagliardi simply inserted starting tight end Corey Stanger (Sr., Clear Lake, Minn./Becker HS), and all he did was throw three touchdowns, no interceptions and 14 of 31 passes for 203 yards as the Johnnies claimed a 34-18 win. Stanger is expected to start against the Auggies on Saturday.

The Johnnies are a powerful force on offense -- averaging 483 yards (266 rushing, 217 passing) per game -- and have outscored their three opponents 116-53 (an average of 38.7 to 17.7). Junior fullback Chris Moore (Jr., Edina, Minn.) is averaging 177.7 rushing yards per game, reaching the century mark in the last three games in a row. Meanwhile, wide receiver Ben Sieben (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) is also reaching the century mark often, with a 117.3 yards-per-game average in receiving yardage.

On defense, the Johnnies are allowing an average of 342 yards per game (98 rushing, 244 passing), but have forced seven interceptions and have 12 quarterback sacks this year. Grady McGovern (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) and Will Gibson (Sr., Winona, Minn./Cotter HS) have two interceptions apiece. Phil Trier (Jr., Princeton, Minn.) leads the team with three sacks this year.

The special teams have also shined for the Johnnies. SJU blocked two punts in last week's win over the Tommies, and senior punter Phil Barry (Sr., Crete, Neb.) punted the ball eight times for an average of 49.3 yards last week -- including a 68-yarder -- to earn MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Barry is averaging 44.8 yards per punt this season.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts Gustavus Adolphus College in the Auggies' Homecoming game next Saturday (10/9) at Anderson-Nelson Field. Game time is 1 p.m. and the game will be aired locally on KYCR-AM 1570. St. John's will play at Bethel next Saturday at 1 p.m.
