MINNEAPOLIS (10/23/99) -- Greg Kaiser (Sr., Mora, Minn.) threw for two scores and rushed for two touchdowns Saturday, leading the University of St. Thomas football team to a 30-20 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Anderson-Nelson Field.
St. Thomas took advantage of six Augsburg turnovers -- five fumbles and one interception -- to improve to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC, maintaining a share of the lead in the conference. Augsburg drops to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Four of the six Augsburg turnovers eventually led to St. Thomas scores. The Tommies eventually built a 30-7 lead before Augsburg scored twice late in the fourth period.
The Tommies used a balanced offensive attack and strong defense to score the victory. St. Thomas outgained the Auggies by a 371-331 margin, though the Tommie defense limited Augsburg to just 11 net rushing yards in the game. St. Thomas had an incredible 58 rushing attempts for 230 yards, to go with 141 passing yards.
Kaiser threw for 133 yards, completing 14 of 23 passes with one interception. He threw scores of 16 yards to Jon Learn (So., Red Wing, Minn.) in the first quarter and four yards to Andy Kaiser (So., Mora, Minn.) early in the second quarter. Kaiser also had two one-yard rushes for scores, one with 39 seconds remaining in the first half and another to seal the win with 7:54 remaining in the game.
Augsburg's lone score in the first half came after a blocked punt by
Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), his second of the season, which
Chad Olson (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) recovered in the end zone with 1:58 remaining in the first quarter.
The Auggies couldn't score again until the final three minutes of the game, when quarterback
John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.) -- making just his second collegiate start at quarterback -- threw two touchdown passes. He had an eight-yard pass to
Ryan Hupka (Jr., Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick's HS) with 3:03 left and an 82-yard pass to
Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy) with 1:31 left. An onside kick attempt failed by the Auggies.
The Tommies dominated the flow of the game, with 82 offensive plays to Augsburg's 57, controlling the time of possession by a 38:26 to 21:34 margin.
Jake Barkley (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led the Tommies with 126 rushing yards on 28 carries. Brent Nelson (So., Hibbing, Minn.) had four catches for 45 yards, and Justin Hall (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) caught four passes for 41 yards.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) led the Auggies with 45 rushing yards on 15 carries. Rochon-Washington had 130 receiving yards on three catches, and
Sam Gross (Fr., Springfield, Minn.) caught three passes for 78 yards.
Steve Norlander (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) led the Tommies with eight tackles (seven solo), incluidng 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Blane Tetreault (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) had six tackles (three solo).
Augsburg's defense was paced by
Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who had 13 tackles (10 solo). Kern had 12 tackles (nine solo) and
Joe Souba (Jr., Hayward, Wis.) and
Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles apiece.
Augsburg hosts Carleton next Saturday (10/30) at Anderson-Nelson Field, while St. Thomas hosts Bethel.

PREGAME NOTES
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (4-2 overall, 2-2 MIAC) take on the University of St. Thomas Tommies (4-2 overall, 4-1 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m., at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field (2,000) in Minneapolis, Minn. St. Thomas leads the all-time series 45-8-2, dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1928. St. Thomas has won the last three games in a row in the series, the longest current winning streak of any MIAC opponent against Augsburg. The Auggies' last win in the series was a 28-7 triumph at Anderson-Nelson Field on Oct. 21, 1995. Augsburg has won just twice in the series (1992, 1995) since 1971.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg is in his ninth season and currently has a 44-43 career mark. St. Thomas head coach Don Roney is in his second season and has a 11-5 career mark.
RADIO: All Augsburg football games are aired live on KYCR-AM 1570 in the Twin Cities, with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. LAST WEEK: Augsburg broke a two-game losing streak with a 27-7 win at Macalester last Saturday, while St. Thomas grabbed a share of the MIAC lead with a 27-6 win against Carleton at UST's O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.
LAST YEAR: In one of the most exciting games in recent years in the MIAC, St. Thomas triumphed over Augsburg 29-28 in two overtimes at O'Shaughnessy Stadium on Oct. 24, 1998. St. Thomas held a 21-3 first-half lead before the Auggies rallied to tie the game at 21-21 and send it to overtime. In the first overtime, Augsburg kicker
Martin Hlinka had a chance to win the game with a 39-yard field goal, but it sailed wide left -- his first field-goal miss of the season. In the second overtime, Augsburg's
Tim Hamer caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Paul Tetzloff, which, combined with Hlinka's extra point, gave the Auggies a 28-21 lead. But UST's Chris Chappuis caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Greg Kaiser, and the two hooked up again on a two-point conversion pass to give the Tommies the win. The game featured several big plays and historic performances. Kaiser, celebrating his 21st birthday, tied an NCAA record with a 99-yard touchdown pass to Mark Warder. Brad Grossman scored on an 80-yard run for the Tommies. And Augsburg's
Scott Hvistendahl took another step toward college football immortality by breaking the 4,000-yard barrier in career receiving yardage with a 15-catch, 252-yard performance. Augsburg outgained the Tommies 488-452 in the game, including 99 yards by running back
Thane Drier. Tetzloff scored twice on short runs for the Auggies.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg College and the University of St. Thomas lock horns this week in a crucial contest for hopes of a positive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finish. Both teams enter today's game with identical 4-2 overall marks, but the Tommies enter today's game with a 4-1 conference record -- one of four teams to share the lead in the MIAC.
Augsburg broke a two-game losing streak with an impressive 27-7 victory at Macalester last Saturday. The Auggies compiled a season-high 374 yards of total offense (207 passing, 167 rushing) against the Scots, taking advantage of three rushing touchdowns by
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS). Warden broke the century mark for the third time this season, rushing for 143 yards on 28 carries. Through six games, Warden has 560 yards on 149 carries -- already the best rushing total for a single season by an Auggie since 1995, when Aaron Daubanton rushed for 612 yards on 150 carries in 10 games.
Ironically, 1995 was also the last season Augsburg beat St. Thomas, when the Auggies triumphed 28-7 at Anderson-Nelson Field. Augsburg has lost three games in a row to the Tommies, the longest streak of losses to any one opponent in the MIAC for the Auggies.
Back to Warden. The senior's current rushing average (24.8 carries and 93.3 yards per game) puts him on pace to reach Augsburg's all-time rushing records and become just the second Auggie ever to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing barrier. The single-season rushing attempt record, 217, was set by Wayne Graves in 1973. The single-season yardage record, 1,011, was set by Marty Alger in 1992.
Warden also has six rushing touchdowns this season, just two off the single-season mark of eight, achieved by Alger in 1993, Hugh Weathers in 1981 and Mike Strandness in 1994.
QB SHAKEUP PRESENTS INTERESTING PROBLEM THIS WEEK: Last Saturday, Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg and his staff wanted to shake up the offense from two consecutive losses in MIAC play, so they gave backup quarterback
John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.) his first collegiate start against the Macalester Scots. All Goodale did was throw for 207 yards, completing 17 of 28 passes with one touchdown and one interception in Augsburg's 27-7 win in St. Paul.
Goodale's performance against the Scots presents the Auggie coaching staff with an interesting problem as this week's game approaches -- who to start at quarterback? Osberg and offensive coordinator
Drew Privette have indicated that the starting quarterback spot will be a game-time decision today between Goodale and regular starter
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), who has thrown for 3,210 yards in his career (1996, 1998-99).
In five starts, Tetzloff has thrown for 757 yards (60 of 127, five TDs), but has 12 interceptions. In four appearances this year, including three backup appearances and the start against the Scots, Goodale has thrown for 332 yards (26 of 46) with one TD and two interceptions.
DEFENSIVE PLAYERS CLOSING IN ON SCHOOL RECORDS: One of the brightest parts of Augsburg's season so far has been the play of the defense. Throw out the 55-0 loss at MIAC co-leader St. John's on Oct. 2, and you have a defense that has been a steady force in MIAC play.
A player who is quietly having an outstanding season is linebacker
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS), who leads the team with 47 tackles (29 solo), adding a fumble recovery, interception and 2.5 tackles for loss to his resume.
Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), a co-captain, has also been a team leader, with 46 tackles (34 solo) an interception and six pass break-ups. He now has 11 career interceptions, putting him in fourth place in school history. Jeremy Dalluge (1992-95) has the career interception record, 17. A player who could break Dalluge's record for pickoffs, given his current pace, is freshman
Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn/Washburn HS). He tied a single-game school record with three pickoffs in the season-opening win over Mayville State, and with one more in last week's win over Macalester, he now has five on the season -- just three off the school record of eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993.
In the sack department, two Auggies have shots at school records in the final four games of the season.
Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) has 7.5 sacks this season, already fourth-best in a single year. The single-season record, 14, was set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Chappuis is third on the team in total tackles with 44 (28 solo) and 11 tackles for loss. Chappuis' four-sack performance against Macalester last week was the second-most in a game in school history. Anderson had a record five sacks in a game against St. Thomas in 1995. Meanwhile,
Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), who had two sacks last week, has 6.5 on the season and 16.0 on his career, tying him for third best for a career in school history. Anderson's 28.5 (1992-95) is the career record.
SCOUTING THE TOMMIES: The University of St. Thomas enters this week's game against the Auggies on a roll, having won its last three games in a row and 10 of their last 12, dating back to last season. The Tommies are in a four-way tie for first in the MIAC.
One of the big keys to the Tommies' success in recent years has been the play of quarterback Greg Kaiser (Sr., Mora, Minn.), who has thrown for 1,203 yards and seven touchdowns entering today's game (88 of 137, 5 INTs). Kaiser, an All-America candidate this year, is already a Burger King National Scholar Athlete, GTE Academic All-American and a member of the AFCA Good Works Team. He is currently in second place on the all-time Tommie throwing list, with 5,766 career passing yards, which puts him 17th in Minnesota collegiate history. Augsburg's Derrin Lamker (1993-97) is 12th with 6,624 career yards.
Kaiser's primary targets have been three freshmen -- receivers Justin Hall (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) and Andy Hilliard (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.), and fullback Jake Barkley (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong HS). Hall has 353 yards on 24 receptions, Barkley has 257 yards on 16 catches, and Hilliard has 162 yards on 13 catches. Marcus Ludtke (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) has been the Tommies' top rusher, with 485 yards on 163 carries and five touchdowns.
75TH ANNIVERSARY OF FOOTBALL ALUMNI EVENT IS SATURDAY: The 1999-2000 school year is being observed as the 75th anniversary of Augsburg College's intercollegiate athletics program. Each of Augsburg's 17 varsity sports is having a special alumni gathering to celebrate the 75th anniversary. This week's game against St. Thomas is the football celebration, and at halftime of the game, football alumni are invited to be recognized on the field in a special ceremony. Alumni are asked to fill out information cards that will be available at the entrance to Anderson-Nelson Field, which will be used as each alum is publicly introduced during the ceremony.
Augsburg has had a strong tradition of football, dating back to when the team was founded in 1926. Two years after the team began play in the MIAC, coach Conrad Eklund's team won the MIAC championship. Augsburg's next MIAC title came in 1997, with the school's all-time best record, 10-2 and an NCAA Division III national playoff quarterfinal appearance.
Augsburg has always had a tradition of producing competitive, exciting teams that have a never-say-die attitude and, regardless of record, will always be a foe that an opponent cannot take lightly. In 68 seasons of football competition (1926-34, 1939-42, 1945-present), Augsburg has an all-time football record of 172-372-20 overall, 125-325-13 in MIAC games.
