MINNEAPOLIS (10/23/99) --
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), making his first start at quarterback in two weeks, tied a school record by completing 12 consecutive passes in the first half, as his Augsburg College football team claimed a 52-7 victory over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the MIAC, while Carleton drops to 2-6 overall, 1-6 in the league. Augsburg clinches its sixth .500 or better season in the last seven years under ninth-year head coach
Jack Osberg.
The 52-point performance marks just the third time in school history that Augsburg has scored 50 points or more in a single game, and the 45-point margin of victory is the most by an Augsburg team since a 53-0 win over Dakota Wesleyan in 1981.
Tetzloff completed his first 12 passes of the game for 184 yards and two touchdowns, while scoring one touchdown himself before he left the game with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter with a pinched nerve in his non-throwing hand. Augsburg was ahead 28-0 at that point, en route to a 38-7 halftime edge.
Tetzloff's 12-for-12 passing performance ties a school single-game record for consecutive passes completed, first set by Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against Concordia.
John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.), who had been the Auggies' starter the past two weeks, completed nine of 15 passes for 140 yards and two scores in relief of Tetzloff.
Augsburg put together a dominating offensive performance, with 504 total yards (324 passing, 218 rushing), easily the most in a single game this season by the Auggies. Meanwhile, Augsburg's defense limited Carleton to just 167 total yards -- 184 passing and minus-17 rushing.
Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.) caught two touchdown passes for the Auggies -- a four-yard pass from Tetzloff in the second quarter and a 27-yarder from Goodale in the third. Johnson led the Auggies with 102 receiving yards on four catches.
John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) also had two touchdowns, both in the first period -- one on a two-yard run and the other on a five-yard pass from Tetzloff.
Other scores came from
Matt Van Alstine (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) on a 33-yard field goal; Goodale, on a 12-yard run late in the first half; and
Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy), on a 21-yard pass from Goodale early in the fourth quarter.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had his fourth 100-yard-plus rushing game of the season, with 154 yards on 26 carries. Warden now has 759 rushing yards on 190 rushes. The 190 rushes are already the third-most in a single season in school history.
Augsburg's defense also came through, forcing four fumbles (two interceptions, two fumbles) and recording three quarterback sacks.
Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) had two sacks, while
Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had the other.
Chad Olson (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) led the Auggie defense with six tackles (two solo), while
Adam Leiter (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS),
Dane Lund (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Joe Souba (Jr., Hayward, Wis.) had four tackles apiece. Leiter and
Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had interceptions for the Auggies.
Carleton's lone score came from Steve Nuessle (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Anderson (So., Waseca, Minn.) with 50 seconds remaining in the first half.
Anderson, making his first career start at quarterback after regular starter Jon Groteboer (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) was lost for the season with a broken collarbone last week, threw for 156 yards, completing 13 of 23 passes. Andy Quist (Sr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS), in relief of Anderson in the second half, threw for 28 yards.
Kyle Swartout (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led Knight rushers with 23 yards on eight carries, while Brody Fechle (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the receivers with 55 yards on two catches.
Kyle Fetherolf (Jr., Trexlertown, Penn./Parkland HS) led the Knights with 12 tackles (nine solo), while Scott O'Reilly (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had 10 tackles (seven solo).
Augsburg plays at Bethel next Saturday (11/6) at 1 p.m., while Carleton hosts St. John's, also at 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped a 30-20 decision at home to St. Thomas last Saturday, while Carleton lost the annual "Goat Trophy" game to crosstown rival St. Olaf 27-19 at Laird Stadium in Northfield, Minn.
LAST YEAR: Augsburg accomplished a unique first with its 31-28 win over Carleton last year in Northfield. The win marked the first time ever that Augsburg had beaten both Northfield schools -- Carleton and St. Olaf -- on the road in the same season. The Auggies had beaten St. Olaf in Northfield 31-24 earlier in the season.
Paul Tetzloff had an outstanding afternoon at quarterback, completing 24 of 35 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns -- three to
Scott Hvistendahl, who caught 12 passes for 183 yards.
Thane Drier also had a solid day on the ground, gaining 86 yards on 15 carries, while
Brian Warden had 70 yards on eight carries. Augsburg had one of its top offensive games in recent years, compiling 508 yards of total offense (303 passing, 205 rushing) in the win.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg College welcomes the Carleton College Knights to Anderson-Nelson Field for Saturday's game, the last home game of the season in "The Cage."
For the Auggies, it's an important game for a number of reasons, one being that Augsburg can wrap up its sixth .500-or better season in the last seven years with a victory. Another reason -- Augsburg needs to get back on the winning track after dropping three of its last four games to fall to 4-3.
Against St. Thomas last week, the Auggies fell behind early and could not mount a comeback until late in the game, a disappointing 30-20 home loss. The Auggies trailed 30-7 at one point in the fourth quarter, and turnovers were the primary culprit -- Augsburg fumbled away the football five times and had one interception, and four of the six turnovers led to Tommie scores.
There were, however, some bright spots in the loss.
Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) notched his second blocked punt of the year, which led to a touchdown when
Chad Olson (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) recovered the blocked kick in the end zone. The other bright spot was the play of backup quarterback
John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.), who got his second collegiate start. He threw for 320 yards and one touchdown, an 82-yard strike to
Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy), Augsburg's longest reception of the season.
This week, quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) returns to the starting quarterback spot after a two-week layoff. He was in line to return to the starting lineup last week, but was sidelined with a severe case of the flu. With a solid performance this week, Tetzloff could eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in passing for the second year in a row. He has 757 passing yards (60-of-127) entering Saturday's game. Goodale has thrown for 652 yards this year.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Carleton College enters Saturday's game with a 2-5 overall record, hoping to pick up a road win for the first time since the first game of last season -- a seven-game drought.
Last week, the Knights dropped a 27-19 home decision to crosstown rival St. Olaf in the annual "Goat Trophy" game in Northfield. St. Olaf scored 17 unanswered points in the first half to take a 17-10 halftime lead, enough to secure the eventual winning margin.
Carleton suffered a major injury in the second half of the game, when quarterback Jon Groteboer (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) was lost for the season with a broken collarbone. Jesse Anderson (So., Waseca, Minn.) was pressed into service and led the Knights on two drives, including a field goal.
Anderson will make his first career start against the Auggies Saturday, though Andy Quist (Sr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS), who was the Knights' starter last year before shifting to the cornerback spot this year, may also see some playing time as the signal-caller.
On defense, two Knights can accomplish a record Saturday. Jeff Thurk (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and J.J. Franz (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) have nine sacks apiece; the single-season scdhool record is 10. Franz is now third on the career sack list, with 17.5; Thurk is seventh, with 15.5.
FINAL HOME GAME FOR 11 AUGGIE SENIORS: Saturday's game is the final home contest for 11 Augsburg seniors, who have been key figures in the continued growth of Augsburg College football. Collectively, this group of seniors have been the most successful in Augsburg football history -- carrying a record of 23-16, an MIAC championship and NCAA Division III national playoff quarterfinal berth (1997) into Saturday's game. We will be honoring each of these seniors during halftime:
Kris Froyum, son of Dale and Lona Froyum of Waconia, Minn. -- Froyum has been a hard-working defensive back throughout his career, working his way up to a key reserve role in the secondary. A two-time Academic All-MIAC Honor Roll recepient, he has 25 career tackles (12 solo) entering Saturday's game.
Mac Gordon, son of Stan and Ann Gordon of Red Wing, Minn. -- Gordon, a tight end/offensive lineman and co-captain this season, has been a solid contributor who has worked his way into a significant role in teh lineup, mostly on the offensive line this season.
Rob Just, son of Allan Just of Lakeville, Minn. -- Just, a tenacious competitor, has been a starting cornerback the last three seasons. He enters Saturday's game with nine career interceptions (three this season), 14 pass break-ups (three this year), and 88 career tackles (49 solo), including 35 (21 solo) this season.
Jake Kern, son of Terrance and Christine Kern of Faribault, Minn. -- Kern, a co-captain, is one of the top DBs in school history. He has 11 career interceptions, 17 pass break-ups and 197 tackles (122 solo), with 58 tackles (43 solo) this season. Kern earned All-MIAC honors in 1997 and 1998, All-America honors in 1997 and GTE Academic All-District and Academic All-MIAC Honor Roll honors twice (1997, 1998).
Dane Lund, son of Curtis and Janet Lund of Burnsville, Minn. -- A solid two-year starter at linebacker for the Auggies, Lund enters Saturday's game with two career interceptions and 94 career total tackles (41 solo). He has 35 total tackles (14 solo) this season with one interception.
Mike O'Hair, son of Ron and Susan O'Hair of Rochester, Minn. -- O'Hair has been a consistent competitor who has worked hard as a backup offensive lineman throughout his career. O'Hair is also an infielder on Augsburg's baseball team.
Chad Olson, son of Byron and Peg Olson of Farmington, Minn. -- Olson has battled through injuries to become a key member of the defensive secondary this year. Entering Saturday, he has 26 tackles (11 solo), one forced fumble and a recovery of a blocked punt for a touchdown. He is also on Augsburg's wrestling team.
