COLLEGE FOOTBALL -- Augsburg 7, Concordia 5
MINNEAPOLIS (11/12/99) --
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) threw a 40-yard halfback-option pass for a touchdown to
Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.) with 1:34 remaining, giving Augsburg College a 7-5 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest at the Metrodome on Friday afternoon.
Augsburg finishes the season with a 6-4 overall record and 5-4 MIAC mark, marking just the second time in school history that an Augsburg team has finished with an above-.500 record three years in a row. Augsburg finished 10-2 (MIAC champions) in 1997 and 6-4 in 1998; the last time the feat had happened for Augsburg in the 69 seasons the school has played football (1926-34, 1939-42, 1945-present) was from 1927-29 (4-2 in 197, 4-1-2 in 1928, 4-2-1 in 1929).
Concordia, which had entered the game with a possible shot at sharing the MIAC title, finished the season 6-4 overall and 6-3 in the MIAC. Augsburg has now beaten Concordia four times in a row, dating back to the 1997 season.
The game was a scoreless defensive struggle until the 13:04 mark, when Concordia's Clayton Horgen (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) hit a 42-yard field goal, his first field goal of the game after missing two field goals earlier (29 and 45 yards). Augsburg's
Matt Van Alstine (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had also missed two field goals (43, 38) earlier in the game.
The halfback-option pass from Warden to Johnson completed a seven-play, 80-yard drive, extended two plays earlier by a fourth-down 27-yard pass from
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) to Johnson, which put the ball on the Concordia 47-yard line.
Johnson caught six passes for 135 yards in the game, marking the third consecutive game in which he had caught passes for more than 100 yards.
Concordia was credited with a safety when Tetzloff ran out of the end zone on fourth down on the final play of the game.
Augsburg was limited to just 193 yards of total offense, including minus-8 rushing (64 positive, 72 lost on sacks and the 31-yard run out of the end zone for the safety). Tetzloff was sacked six times by the Cobber defense. Concordia had 257 yards of total offense in the game (126 rushing, 131 passing).
Tetzloff completed just 10 of 26 passes with one interception for 16 yards. Concordia quarterback Jeremy Nordick (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.), who entered the game midway through the second quarter, completed 15 passes for 131 yards, but was intercepted five times by the Auggies.
Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had two interceptions for the Auggies, giving him seven on the season -- the second-most in a single season in school history.
Nathan Reiff (Sr., Whitehall, Mont.) led the Cobbers with 46 yards on 13 rushes, while Adam Strainer (Jr., Helena, Mont.) caught six passes for 181 yards.
Warden rushed for 32 yards on 18 carries, giving him the single-season school record for rushes in the season. He finished the year with 232 carries, eclipsing the old mark of 217, set by Wayne Graves in 1973. Warden finished with 858 rushing yards, the fifth-most in a single season in school history.
Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with 13 tackles (11 solo) and an interception, giving him 12 to finish his career -- tied for third-best in the Augsburg record books.
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had nine tackles (five solo) for Augsburg.
Jeff Hartquist (Jr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) led the Cobbers with eight tackles (six solo) and a sack. Dan Tollefson (Jr., Madison, Minn./Laq Qui Parle Valley HS) had seven tackles (all solo).
Mark Hankel (Jr., Mapleton, N.D./Oak Grove HS) had a half-sack in the game, giving him a Concordia single-season record of 14 sacks in the year.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg lost an early lead and fell to Bethel 31-14 in Arden Hills last Saturday, while Concordia was a victim of a dome defeat, falling 22-7 to the University of St. Thomas on Friday at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.
LAST YEAR: It was a special game for Augsburg, the MIAC and Division III football last year when the Auggies and Cobbers met at the Metrodome. With an 18-catch, 230-yard receiving performance in Augsburg's 25-0 win over the Cobbers,
Scott Hvistendahl set the NCAA all-divisions career receiving yardage record with 4,696 career yards on 285 receptions. The mark broke a 14-year record held by Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State, 1981-84). Hvistendahl's mark was broken this year by Scott Pingel of Westminster (Mo.). Hvistendahl set the record on the last catch of his career -- a four-yard slant pattern with 6:59 remaining in the game. The win was Augsburg's third in a row over the Cobbers and the Auggies' first shutout win of the Cobbers since a 6-0 win in 1929.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg looks to play the role of spoiler in its last game of the season by knocking the Cobbers out of a possible share of the MIAC championship, while setting a new milestone for Auggie football. If Augsburg tops the Cobbers for the fourth time in a row, the Auggies would finish 6-4 -- marking just the second time in the 68 seasons Augsburg has played football (1926-34, 1939-42, 1945-present) that Augsburg teams would have finished with above-.500 records three straight years. Augsburg won the MIAC crown and finished 10-2 in 1997, while finishing 6-4 in 1998. The previous three-season winning run came from 1927-29 (4-2 in 1927, 4-1-2 in 1928, 4-2-1 in 1929). Augsburg teams have finished with three consecutive at-least-.500 campaigns from 1972-74 (5-4 in 1972, 7-2 in 1973, 5-5 in 1974) and from 1993-95 (5-5 in 1993, 5-5 in 1994, 6-4 in 1995).
How will the Auggies accomplish this feat? Through a passing offense that has been clicking on all cylinders the last two weeks. In a disappointing 31-14 loss to Bethel last week, quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) threw for 250 yards as the Auggies built a 7-3 halftime lead.
Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.) continued to shine, with his second-straight 100-plus-yard receiving performance. Against the Royals, Johnson caught seven of Tetzloff's passes for 158 yards, the most in a single game for the Auggies since Hvistendahl's feat a year ago at the Metrodome.
Augsburg's running game will also have to shine to provide a balance between the run and pass. It will be a tough call against a strong Cobber defense that has allowed an average of just 111.3 rushing yards per game this season.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) has been able to sparkle at times this year from the running back spot, with four 100-yard rushing efforts this year. He had had 67 yards on 24 rushes against the Royals.
On defense, the Auggies' front four -- defensive ends
Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) and
Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) and defensive tackles
Ben Tangert (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and
Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) -- played perhaps their best game of the year against the Royals, helping to keep Bethel out of the end zone until midway through the third quarter. However, the secondary gave up too many big plays to the Royals -- touchdown passes of 63 and 37 yards, along with a 38-yard scoring scamper -- stats which can't happen against Concordia's steady offense.
MOVING UP THE RECORD SCALES -- Three Auggies could put their names in the record books with outstanding performances on Friday.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) has rushed for 826 yards on 214 carries, just four carries shy of breaking the school's single-season mark of 217, set by Wayne Graves in 1973. Warden, who is No. 4 in the MIAC in rushing statistics (87 yards per game in MIAC play), has a shot of becoming just the second Auggie to rush for 900 yards or more in a single season if he gains at least 74 yards on Friday (his per-game average is 91.8 rushing yards). The single-season rushing record is 1,011, set by Marty Alger in 1992. Warden also has six rushing touchdowns this year; the single-season record is eight, set by Mike Strandness in 1994, Alger in 1993 and Hugh Weathers in 1981.
Defensive end
Matt Chappuis' (So., Faribault, Minn.) is currently in second place on the school's single-season sack record list with nine this year. The record, 14, was set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Anderson also holds the career sack mark of 28.5, heading a list that
Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) is moving up. Van Houten has 6.5 sacks this year, giving him 17.0 on his career, third on the school's all-time list. Paul Moore's 23.5 sacks, from 1994-97, is second to Anderson's 28.5.
SCOUTING THE COBBERS: Cobber notes can be accessed on this link to the Concordia website.
AUGGIES IN DOMES, ON TURF: Friday's game is the 16th that Augsburg has played in the Metrodome since 1983, and 17th in a domed stadium (Augsburg and Concordia played their 1997 NCAA playoff game at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., a game Augsburg won 34-22). At the Metrodome, Augsburg is 5-10, but the Auggies have won four of the last five games they have played in the downtown Minneapolis facility. Head coach
Jack Osberg (1991-present) is 5-3 in Metrodome games.
On artificial turf (including Augsburg's home field, Anderson-Nelson Field, which opened in 1984), Augsburg is 34-53-1, but in the nine seasons under Osberg, the Auggies are 31-20 in games on fake grass.
FINAL GAME FOR 11 AUGGIE SENIORS: Friday's game is the final contest for 11 Augsburg seniors, who have been key figures in the continued growth of Augsburg College football. Collectively, this group of seniors have been the most successful in Augsburg football history -- carrying a record of 24-17, an MIAC championship and NCAA Division III national playoff quarterfinal berth (1997) into their final game.
Kris Froyum, son of Dale and Lona Froyum of Waconia, Minn. -- Froyum has been a hard-working defensive back throughout his career, working his way up to a key reserve role in the secondary. He is a two-time Academic All-MIAC Honor Roll recepient.
Mac Gordon, son of Stan and Ann Gordon of Red Wing, Minn. -- Gordon, a tight end/offensive lineman and co-captain this season, has been a solid contributor who has worked his way into a significant role in the lineup, mostly on the offensive line this season.
Rob Just, son of Allan Just of Lakeville, Minn. -- Just, a tenacious competitor, has been a starting cornerback the last three seasons.
Jake Kern, son of Terrance and Christine Kern of Faribault, Minn. -- Kern, a co-captain, is one of the top defensive backs in school history. Kern earned All-MIAC honors in 1997 and 1998, All-America honors in 1997 and GTE Academic All-District and Academic All-MIAC Honor Roll honors twice (1997, 1998).
Dane Lund, son of Curtis and Janet Lund of Burnsville, Minn. -- Lund has been a solid two-year starter at linebacker for the Auggies.
Mike O'Hair, son of Ron and Susan O'Hair of Rochester, Minn. -- O'Hair has been a consistent competitor who has worked hard as a backup offensive lineman throughout his career. O'Hair is also an infielder on Augsburg's baseball team.
Chad Olson, son of Byron and Peg Olson of Farmington, Minn. -- Olson has battled through injuries to become a key member of the defensive secondary this year.
