COLLEGE FOOTBALL -- BETHEL 31, AUGSBURG 14

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (11/6/99) -- Josh Savageau (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) rushed for 126 yards and scored three touchdowns Saturday, part of a 407-yard offensive performance for Bethel College, as the host Royals cruised in the second half to a come-from-behind, 31-14 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game at Armstrong Stadium.

Bethel improves to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the MIAC with its third straight victory. Augsburg drops to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the MIAC. Both teams finish their seasons in the Metrodome on Friday (11/12), as the Auggies host Concordia-Moorhead at 2 p.m. The Royals host Carleton at 8 p.m. Bethel is still in the hunt for an NCAA Division III national playoff berth.

Savageau scored on runs of 20 and 38 yards, as well as catching a 23-yard pass from Bart Becker (Jr., Conrad, Mont.). All three scores came in the second half, as Bethel rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit to outscore the Auggies 28-7 in the second half.

Becker threw for 238 yards, completing 20 of 29 passes with just one pickoff. His other passing touchdown came on a third-quarter 63-yard strike to Jordy Hage (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS), one play after Augsburg had taken a 14-9 lead on a seven-yard scoring strike from Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) to Desman Oakley (Jr., Indianola, Iowa).

Bethel compiled 311 of its 407 yards of total offense in the second half. Augsburg was limited to just 277 yards of offense in the contest (27 rushing, 250 passing).

Late in the first half, Augsburg took advantage of a 74-yard pass from Tetzloff to Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.), Augsburg's second-longest pass completion of the season, which put the ball on the Bethel 1-yard line. Two plays later, Tetzloff scored on a one-yard sneak to give the Auggies a 7-3 halftime edge.

Johnson led the Auggies with 158 receiving yards on seven receptions, the most yards gained by an Auggie receiver so far this season and just the second 100-yard-plus receiving performance by an Auggie this year Tetzloff completed 19 of 32 passes for 250 yards in the game.

However, the Auggies could not muster much offensive momentum in the second half. Tetzloff was sacked five times and intercepted twice by the Royal defense. Gary Stone (Sr., Conrad, Mont.) had seven tackles (all solo) and 1.5 sacks to lead the Royal defense. Ben Kidd (So., Roseville, Minn.) had eight tackles (seven solo), and Kirk Midthun (Sr., Dodge Center, Minn./Triton HS) had seven tackles (all solo).

Augsburg's defense was paced by Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), who had eight tackles (all solo), and Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), who had eight tackles (seven solo) and a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. Scott Archambault (So., Faribault, Minn.) added seven tackles (six solo).

Seth Olson (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) 27-yard field goal to open the scoring for the Royals.

Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 67 yards on 24 rushes for the Auggies. The totals give him 826 yards on 214 carries this season. The 214 carries are just three shy of the school's single-season record of 217, set by Wayne Graves in 1973. Warden's 826 yards this season puts him in fifth place on the school's single-season rushing record list; the record, 1,011 yards, was set by Marty Alger in 1992.

PREGAME NOTES

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (5-3 overall, 4-3 MIAC) take on the Bethel College Royals (6-2 overall, 5-2 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m., at Bethel's Armstrong Stadium (3,800) in Arden Hills, Minn. Augsburg leads the all-time series 13-8-3, dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1949. The Auggies and Royals have played every season since Bethel joined the MIAC in 1978. Bethel has won four of the last five games in the series, including last year's 35-28 win at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is in his ninth season and currently has a 45-44 career mark. Bethel head coach Steve Johnson is in his 11th season and has a 65-41-1 career mark.

RADIO: All Augsburg football games are aired live on KYCR-AM 1570 in the Twin Cities, with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. The pregame show begins at 12:30 p.m., with game action starting at 1 p.m. Outside the Twin Cities, Auggie fans can hear all the action using the TEAMLINE pay-per-call service. Using a credit card, call 1-800-846-4700 and enter the Augsburg team code, 5545. For more information and costs for TEAMLINE, call 1-800-846-4630.

TELEVISION: The game is also being broadcast on MediaOne cable television in St. Paul and most of the suburban Twin Cities. It is not being cablecast in Minneapolis or the Augsburg campus, however.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg claimed a 52-7 win over Carleton at Anderson-Nelson Field last week, while Bethel edged St. Thomas 22-20 at UST's O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

LAST YEAR: Despite Bethel winning last year's game 35-28, the game was a special one for Augsburg football. Augsburg's Scott Hvistendahl broke the NCAA Division III career record for receiving yardage with a 14-reception, 246-yard, one touchdown receiving performance. Hvistendahl's total after the Bethel game was 4,466 career yards on 267 receptions, breaking the NCAA Division III career yardage record previously held by Kurt Barth of Eureka (Ill., 4,311 yards on 256 receptions from 1994-97). Augsburg rallied from a 28-7 deficit in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-21, but could get no farther in a losing effort.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg put together its first dominant offensive performance of the season in its 52-7 win over Carleton, rolling up with 504 total yards (324 passing, 218 rushing), easily the most in a single game this season. Meanwhile, Augsburg's defense limited Carleton to just 167 total yards -- 184 passing and minus-17 rushing.

The 52-point performance marked just the fourth time in school history that Augsburg has scored 50 points or more in a single game, and the 45-point margin of victory was the most by an Augsburg team since a 53-0 win over Dakota Wesleyan in 1981.

The game was a breakout performance for quarterback Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), who completed his first 12 passes of the game for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored one touchdown himself before leaving the game with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter with a pinched nerve in his non-throwing hand. Tetzloff is healthy for this week's game. Augsburg was ahead 28-0 when he left the game, en route to a 38-7 halftime edge. Tetzloff's 12-for-12 passing performance tied a school single-game record for consecutive passes completed, first set by Derrin Lamker in a 1997 game against Concordia.

Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.) became the first Auggie receiver this season to have a 100-yard receiving performance, catching four balls for 102 yards. He caught two touchdown passes for the Auggies -- a four-yard pass from Tetzloff in the second quarter and a 27-yarder from John Goodale (So., Buffalo, Minn.) in the third.

Augsburg's defense also came through, forcing four fumbles (two interceptions, two fumbles) and recording three quarterback sacks. Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) had two sacks, while Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had the other.

WARDEN EDGING CLOSER TO RUSHING RECORDS -- Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had his fourth 100-yard-plus rushing game of the season against Carleton, with a season-high 154 yards on 26 carries. Warden earned MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his effort, marking the third time an Augsburg player has scored MIAC Player of the Week honors. Strong safety Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) earned the honors on defense with his three-interception performance in the season-opening win over Mayville State, while defensive end Matt Chappuis' (So., Faribault, Minn.) dominant defensive performance against Hamline the next week gave him the honors.

Warden has already put together one of the best rushing marks in school history, entering the eighth week of the season with 759 rushing yards on 190 rushes. The 190 rushes are already the third-most in a single season in school history, and he is within 49 yards of fifth place on the single-season rushing yardage list.

The single-season rushing yardage record is 1,011, set by Marty Alger in 1992, while the rushing attempts record is 217, set by Wayne Graves in 1973. Given Warden's average of 27.1 carries per game this season, he could tie or break Graves' attempts record this week. Warden's 94.9 rushing yards-per-game average, if projected to the final two weeks of the season, would place him at 949 yards -- 62 yards from Graves' mark but still just the second Auggie running back to ever rush for 900 yards or more in a single season.

SCOUTING THE ROYALS: Bethel has been one of the most consistent teams in MIAC play over the past several years, and takes a 6-2 record into Saturday's game. However, Bethel narrowly escaped with a 22-20 win over St. Thomas last Saturday.

Bethel's special teams provided the difference in the win, and collectively earned MIAC Special Teams Player(s) of the Week honors. The Royals returned four kicks for 184 yards, led by senior linebacker Gary Stone (Sr., Conrad, Mont.) with three returns for 153 yards, including a 83 yard touchdown in the second quarter that put Bethel ahead 15-7, and a 53 yard return to begin the second half that led Bethel to a touchdown and a 22-13 lead. Senior strong safety Kirk Midthun (Dodge Center, Minn.) returned one kick for 31 yards and also returned one punt for an 88-yard touchdown for Bethel's first score. The special teams was the deciding factor on the game's final play, as senior defensive end Luke Carlson (St. Paul, Minn.) blocked a St. Thomas 18-yard field goal attempt to preserve the 22-20 victory.

FIRST AUGGIE-ROYAL GAME AT BETHEL SINCE 1994: Saturday's game is the first Augsburg-Bethel game to be played at Bethel since the 1994 season. In that game, Bethel topped the Auggies 27-14. Since 1994, the two teams have played at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field twice (in 1995, a 27-7 Bethel win; and in 1998, a 35-28 Bethel win) and at the Metrodome in consecutive years (1996, a 53-18 Bethel win; and 1997, a 56-22 Augsburg win).

Since the teams began playing in MIAC play in 1978, Augsburg and Bethel have met 21 times, with Augsburg holding a 10-8-3 edge. In nine games played at Bethel since 1978, Augsburg has won four times -- 1979 (20-17), 1980 (42-23), 1984 (26-0) and 1989 (21-20) -- while Bethel has won three times -- 1990 (56-0), 1992 (24-9) and 1994 (27-14). The teams have also tied twice in games at Bethel -- 1982 (13-3, a game Augsburg was later forced to forfeit) and 1987 (30-30).

Augsburg also met Bethel in nonconference play three times, in 1949 (37-2 Augsburg home win), 1953 (31-0 Augsburg home win) and 1954 (an Augsburg school-record 81-0 win at Bethel).

NEXT WEEK: Both teams close their seasons with games next Friday (11/12) at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Augsburg plays Concordia-Moorhead at 2 p.m. (the game will be aired locally on KYCR-AM 1570), and Bethel will play Carleton at 8 p.m.
