ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/18/99) --
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed for 100-plus yards for the second straight week, putting together a 32-carry, 126-yard performance as his Augsburg College football team scored a 15-10 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Hamline University Saturday (9/18) at Hamline's Norton Stadium.
Augsburg remains unbeaten, improving to 2-0 overall, while Hamline falls to 1-1. The game was the MIAC opener for both teams.
Warden, who rushed for 132 yards in the Auggies' 29-27, two-overtime win at Mayville State (N.D.) last weekend, scored his third touchdown of the season on a 1-yard plunge in the first period to open the scoring on Saturday.
The Pipers took the lead early in the second quarter, when Tim Couchman (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) hit Luke Wright (So., Faribault, Minn.) on a 33-yard scoring strike. The resulting conversion kick gave the Pipers a 7-6 lead.
The lead held until midway through the third period, when Augsburg claimed a lead it would not relinquish. Three plays after Augsburg's
Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) forced a fumble on a sack and
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) recovered, Auggie quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) hit
Desman Oakley (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) on a 30-yard pass for a touchdown.
The teams then traded field goals to produce the final margin -- a 33-yard kick by Augsburg's
Matt Van Alstine (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and a 46-yard kick by Hamline's Steve Koehn (Sr., Paynesville, Minn.).
Augsburg's defense held Hamline to 298 yards of total offense, while the Auggie offense produced 323. Tetzloff completed 15 passes for 164 yards in the contest. Oakley had 63 receiving yards on three catches.
Freshman
Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) claimed his fourth interception of the season in Saturday's contest, while
Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) also had a pickoff.
Chappuis had 12 tackles (six solo) to lead the Auggies, while
Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had nine tackles (three solo).
Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had six tackles (four solo) apiece.
Augsburg has its home opener next Saturday (9/25) at 7 p.m. against St. Olaf at Anderson-Nelson Field, while Hamline travels to Bethel for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

PREGAME NOTES
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (1-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC) take on the Hamline University Pipers (1-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC) on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m., at Hamline's Norton Stadium (capacity 2,000) in St. Paul, Minn. The game is the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Hamline leads the all-time series 39-18-2, dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1926. Augsburg has won the last three games in a row in the series, winning 19-16 at Anderson-Nelson Field in 1996, 26-7 at Norton Stadium in 1997 and 24-14 at Anderson-Nelson Field in 1998.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg is in his ninth season and currently has a 41-41 career mark. Hamline head coach Dick Tressel is in his 22nd season with the Pipers and has a career mark of 121-86-2.
RADIO: KYCR-AM 1570 is the home for Auggie football in 1999. This week's game will feature Tom Witschen on play-by-play with Russ Bohaty on analysis. The pregame show begins at 12:30 p.m., with game action starting at 1 p.m. Outside the Twin Cities, Auggie fans can hear all the action using the TEAMLINE pay-per-call service. Using a credit card, call 1-800-846-4700 and enter the Augsburg team code, 5545. For more information and costs for TEAMLINE, call 1-800-846-4630.
LAST WEEK: Both teams were in nonconference action in the first week of the season last Saturday. Augsburg claimed its first win of the year with a 29-27, three-overtime win at Mayville State (N.D.), while Hamline scored a 30-9 triumph at home over Jamestown College (N.D.).
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg's three-overtime victory at Mayville State last week was an emotional, hard-fought game that may have been the spark head coach
Jack Osberg was looking for to propel the team into the long MIAC season.
"I think it was a good game for us," Osberg said. "It was a test of being able to come from behind in conditions that were unfavorable for us. The guys responded well to the challenge, and they didn't lose their focus. We haven't been in that position recently where we've been able to come around and come from behind that many times."
Augsburg had to rally four times from deficits in the contest, including the final rally in the third overtime, when quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) capped the game with a one-yard plunge into the end zone on fourth down and goal, then threw the game-winning two-point conversion to
John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS). Tetzloff had to rally himself after suffering a slight knee sprain in the third quarter that forced him to sit out for two series. Tetzloff is healthy and will start for the Auggies on Saturday.
DEFENSE SHINES IN WIN: The victory over Mayville State was, in large part, due to an outstanding game by the Auggie defense, which was on the field more than normal -- Mayville State held the ball for 90 plays on offense for 304 yards. Combine that with sloppy field conditions, thanks to a constant rain shower, and you have a test for the defense that was passed with flying colors.
"Once our defense got a feel for the field and the conditions, they played a tremendous game," Osberg said. "They played with their backs against the wall all the time and really shined. We did well enough to win the game offensively, and our defense played a tremendous game. Mayville scored on a few of our mistakes, but they're mistakes that we can correct."
Linebacker
Dane Lund (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) led the Auggies with 12 tackles (2 solo), while lineman
Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) had 11 tackles (7 solo), including 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. Linebacker
Joe Souba (Jr., Hayward, Wis.) had 11 tackles (3 solo) and linebacker
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had 10 tackles (5 solo) and an interception.
The defense will also gain two starters this Saturday who were forced to sit out the Mayville State game with injuries. Linebacker
Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) and defensive lineman
Brandon Ward (Jr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS), both sat out the nonconference tilt with slight knee injuries and both are healthy enough to return this week.
LOUGHRAN EARNS TOP HONORS IN DEBUT: Auggie defensive back
Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) will remember his college football debut for a long time. Loughran, starting at cornerback, intercepted three passes in Augsburg's 29-27, three-overtime victory at Mayville State (N.D.) on Saturday. In addition to his three pick-offs, Loughran also had three tackles (1 solo), 1.5 for loss. Loughran's first pickoff stopped a 9-play, 45-yard drive by the Comets, his second stopped a drive at the Augsburg 14-yard line and his final interception ended Mayville State's drive in the second overtime. The three inteceptions in a single game ties a school record achieved three earlier times, the most recent by Jason Exley in a 1997 win over Carleton. For his efforts, Loughran was named MIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and earned two national honors from web sites that cover Division III football. He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and was named national Rookie of the Week by USA III Football.
GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT: Running back
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) has been waiting for a chance to start at tailback for the Auggies, but had to play behind all-conference players
Thane Drier and
Jim Peterson for the first three years of his career. But if Warden's first start is any indication of how good he can be, the waiting will be worth it. Warden rushed for 132 yards on 31 carries in rainy weather and poor field conditions in the win at Mayville State. Warden opened the Auggie scoring on a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter, then tied the game at 14-14 on a 47-yard rush in the second period. His rushing performance is the most yards by an Augsburg rusher since Aaron Daubanton's 141-yard performance against St. Thomas on Oct. 21, 1995.
Could Warden's performance, combined with a solid performance from fullback
John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS), be the signal of a sea change in the Auggie offense that has been passing-oriented the last five years? No, the Auggies won't rush the ball 60 times a game, but there will be more balance between the run and pass, Osberg said.
"
Brian Warden stepped up and had a great game. He ran hard on every play and really did well," Osberg said. "
John Rotter also had a great game. I think this year, we'll be able to take what a team gives us defensively and adapt to it. We won't be as totally reliant on the pass as we have been before. We are still capable of passing well and we have the technique to do that, but we will be able to run more, too."
HVISTENDAHL'S RECORD FALLS: Auggie fans knew that the NCAA all-divisions career receiving record
Scott Hvistendahl broke in his last collegiate game last season would be short-lived. It lasted two games into the 1999 season, when Westminster College (Mo.) senior Scott Pingel broke the mark in the second quarter of his team's 45-14 win over Central Methodist College. The reception moved Pingel's career yardage total to 4,712, passing Hvistendahl's 4,696 yards for the record. Pingel, who entered the game needing 124 yards to break the record, set the new standard on his seventh catch of the afternoon, which gave him a total of 139 yards. Pingel finished the game with 13 receptions for 188 yards, boosting his career totals to 322 receptions (also an NCAA all-divisions record) and 4,761 yards. Before his career is over, Pingel will liekly hold every NCAA all-divisions record for receiving. The last mark remaining is career touchdown receptions, which he should break this Saturday against Greenville College (Ill.). Pingel is currently tied for the mark with 55, shared with Chris Bisallion of Illinois Wesleyan. Hvistendahl and Auggie fans should take comfort, however, in the fact that Hvistendahl was the first college football receiver to break an NCAA record held by the immortal Jerry Rice, who set the career receiving yardage and reception marks from 1981-84 at Mississippi Valley State.
SCOUTING THE PIPERS: Hamline opened its 1999 season with a 30-9 win over Jamestown College (N.D.) last Saturday, avenging a 27-13 loss to Jamestown the year before. The Pipers were keyed by a strong performance from Joey Kvamme (So., Warren, Minn.), who rushed for 98 yards on two carries and two touchdowns, while catching a 20-yard pass for another touchdown. Hamline had plenty of options on its offense, as seven different Pipers caught passes and seven different Pipers rushed the football. Quarterback Tim Couchman (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) threw for 148 yards and two scores, as the Pipers put together 312 yards of total offense. On defense, linebacker Ryan Wodele led the way with four tackles and a fourth-quarter interception that led to Hamline's game-clinching score.
Hamline is a much-improved team from its 2-8 record of a year ago. Hamline coach Dick Tressel made a strong preseason challenge to his players -- including 24 returning seniors, one of the largest senior classes in the MIAC -- that the Pipers will be "the season's most improved NCAA Division III football team." It's a challenge that Augsburg's Osberg is quite aware of -- two years ago, Augsburg rallied from a 3-7 1996 campaign to a 10-2 1997 MIAC title year.
"They're physically a tough team, and they always match up well with us," Osberg said. "They're strength is in their offensive line, and they have a nice balance of run and pass. Couchman has improved a lot at the quarterback spot. I expect a nice, close game and a hard-hitting game. We'll have to be on top of things in order to win. It's an important game for both of us because it's our first conference game, and that's always key for momentum."
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg has its home opener next Saturday, when St. Olaf College travels to Anderson-Nelson Field for the lone night game of the season. Game time is 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. The game will be aired live on KKMS-AM 980, the lone diversion from the regular radio schedule for the Auggies. Hamline will take to the road for the first time next week, travelling to Arden Hills, Minn., to play Bethel College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
