MINNEAPOLIS (9/25/99) --
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter Saturday night to provide the eventual winning margin as his Augsburg College Auggies held off the St. Olaf College Oles 30-27 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
The Auggies won despite giving up 482 yards of total offense to the Oles, while compiling 372 yards. However, the Auggies forced five St. Olaf turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles), while committing just two (one interception, one fumble) in the back-and-forth struggle.
Augsburg is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf drops to 0-3 and 0-2 respectively.
Quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) threw two touchdown passes to
Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.), as Augsburg opened up a 23-9 lead early in the fourth quarter. Tetzloff had opened the scoring on a one-yard touchdown plunge in the first period.
St. Olaf cut the lead to 23-19 on a one-yard run by Cordell Hutchins (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) and a 22-yard field goal by Hakkon Nelson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), before Warden's eventual game-clinching rush.
Warden rushed for 76 yards on 26 carries to lead the Auggies, who were held under the 100-yard mark in rushing for the first time this season. Augsburg compiled 90 yards on 34 carries, while Tetzloff threw for a season-high 297 yards, completing 20 of 39 passes with one interception.
Johnson had 69 receiving yards on four catches, while
Tim Murphy (So., Northfield, Minn./Lakeville HS) had five catches for 61 yards. In all, six Auggies caught passes, including
Desman Oakley's (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) three-catch, 52-yard effort.
Joe Hammond (So., Neilsville, Wis.), making his first start for the Oles at quarterback, completed 19 of 42 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off three times.
Brian Sprout (So., Lake City, Minn.) caught two passes for 122 yards to lead the Oles, including a 52-yard scoring pass from Hammond. Steve Ryan (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) caught five passes for 99 yards.
Manuel Spreigl (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) led the Oles in rushing with 104 yards on 15 carries. He also caught a 10-yard pass for a touchdown with 32 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.
Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had two interceptions for the Auggies, to go with 10 tackles (five solo) on the night. Just now has three interceptions on the season, second-most on the team.
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had 13 tackles (nine solo) and
Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had nine tackles (seven solo) and an interception.
Matt Lafferty (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) led the Oles with 10 tackles (nine solo). Doug Wolgamont (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.) had six tackles (all solo) and an interception.
Augsburg plays at St. John's next Saturday, while St. Olaf hosts Bethel.

PREGAME NOTES
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (2-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC) take on the Hamline University Pipers (0-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field in Minneapolis, Minn. St. Olaf leads the all-time series 31-10-0, dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1926. Augsburg has won the last two games in a row in the series, winning 42-0 at Anderson-Nelson Field in 1997 and 31-24 at St. Olaf's Manitou Field in 1998. The Auggies have won five of the last six games in the series.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg is in his ninth season and currently has a 42-41 career mark. St. Olaf head coach Paul Miller is in his second season with the Oles and has a career mark of 4-18.
RADIO: Because of nighttime broadcast restrictions, this week's game will be on KKMS-AM 980 instead of Augsburg's regular broadcast station, KYCR-AM 1570. This week's game will feature Tom Witschen on play-by-play. The pregame show begins at 6:30 p.m., with game action starting at 7 p.m. Outside the Twin Cities, Auggie fans can hear all the action using the TEAMLINE pay-per-call service. Using a credit card, call 1-800-846-4700 and enter the Augsburg team code, 5545. For more information and costs for TEAMLINE, call 1-800-846-4630. St. Olaf's broadcast station, KDHL-AM 920 of Faribault, will also air the game. Mike Morrisey and Gordy Kosfeldt will be on the call.
LAST WEEK: Both teams opened conference action last Saturday. Augsburg remained unbeaten with a 15-10 win at Hamline, while St. Olaf dropped its second game in a row to St. Thomas, 33-3, at St. Olaf.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: For the second year in a row, Augsburg has gotten off to a 2-0 start to the season. And looking at the current records, a 3-0 record could be in the works for the Auggies leading into an Oct. 2 game at MIAC power St. John's. But for Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg, the proverbial cliche -- "On any given Saturday..." -- still applies.
"We have to keep improving from week to week," Osberg said. "We have to focus on St. Olaf this week, because this league is too balanced. Anyone can win in any week. Look what happened to Bethel last week in a game in which they were the favorite." Osberg is referring to Concordia-Moorhead's 17-15 victory over Bethel, a team that was considered one of the favorites to capture the MIAC crown.
Augsburg enters the game with an offense that has yet to put up the big numbers that Auggie offenses have been known for in the recent past. That fact could have been easily explained in the Auggies' first win, a 29-27, three-overtime triumph in rainy, sloppy conditions at Mayville State (N.D.), when the Auggies could muster only 224 yards of offense (128 rushing, 96 passing). But in last week's 15-10 win at Hamline, the offense again failed to completely click in conditions that were perfect for football -- with 323 yards of offense (174 rushing, 164 passing).
But every cloud does have a silver lining. One of Osberg's goals for the 1999 season was to show more balance between the passing and running game, instead of the normal pass-happy offense that Augsburg fans have grown accustomed to in recent years, and the running game and offensive line have delivered on Osberg's promise.
"I'm pleased with our running game right now," Osberg said. "We still have to improve the rhythm of our passing game. Playing that first game in the slop did nothing for us in our passing game, so Hamline was our first game where we were really able to pass the football. Now, we expect our passing game to improve in good conditions on our home field."
Quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has had to get used to a relatively new receiving corps this season, but there have been some signs of brilliance. In all, six different receivers caught passes in last week's win, with starting wideouts
Desman Oakley (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) and
Tim Murphy (So., Northfield, Minn./Lakeville HS) catching three passes apiece. Oakley's 30-yard touchdown reception from Tetzloff midway through the third quarter proved to be the game-winning score.
DEFENSE CONTINUES TO SHINE: When was the last time Augsburg players have earned MIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors two weeks in a row? Osberg said he can't remember it happening before, but now it's happened. First, defensive back
Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) earned the honor with a school record-tying three-interception performance in the win at Mayville State.
Now, defensive lineman
Matt Chappuis (So., Faribault, Minn.) has claimed the honor, after a 12 tackle (6 solo) performance in Augsburg's win over Hamline. Chappuis had 1.5 tackles for loss, a QB pressure and a sack of Hamline QB Tim Couchman in the third quarter that forced a fumble, which Augsburg recovered at the Hamline 36-yard line. Three plays later, the Auggies scored the eventual game-winning touchdown.
Chappuis, who leads the team with 23 tackles (13 solo), 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks through two weeks, has been the shining star of a defense that has flexed its muscle in the first two weeks of the season. Augsburg has forced eight turnovers this year (six interceptions, two fumbles) and has five quarterback sacks so far. Seven players have 10-plus tackles after two weeks -- in addition to Chappuis' 23,
Dane Lund (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) has 16 (3 solo),
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) has 13 (7 solo),
Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) has 12 (7 solo),
Joe Souba (Jr., Hayward, Wis.) has 12 (4 solo),
Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) has 11 (5 solo) and
Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) has 11 (3 solo).
"Matt played an outstanding game last week," Osberg said. "Our whole defense played well. Our front four played well against their offensive line, and they're going to have to again this week because St. Olaf's offensive line is huge. We will have to step up again, but I'm proud of the way our defense has played already. We've withstood a lot with our backs to the wall."
One of the key series for the defense this season came early in the third quarter last week. After a Hamline interception put the ball at the Augsburg 21-yard line, the Pipers pushed the ball to the Auggie 3. But on successive third- and fourth-down plays, the Auggie defense held firm and denied Hamline access to the end zone. While Augsburg was forced to punt on the next series, the defensive stop was one of the keys to Augsburg's victory last week.
WARDEN BRINGS SPARK TO AUGGIE RUNNING GAME: Running back
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) has had two strong rushing performances the first two weeks of the season, with a 132-yard, two-touchdown (one on a kick return) effort in the win over Mayville State and 126-yard, one-score performance against Hamline last week. Could this be the sign of a resurgence in the Auggie running game? Only time will tell, but Warden already has the chance to accomplish some unique "firsts" in the recent history of Auggie football:
-- Warden's 132-yard performance against Mayville State was the most yards gained by an Auggie running back since Aaron Daubanton's 141-yard, 17-carry effort in a 28-7 home win over St. Thomas on Oct. 21, 1995.
-- His 32 carries against Hamline were the most by an Auggie since Hugh Weathers had a school-record 38 carries on Nov. 7, 1981 in a 28-19 home win over Hamline at Parade Stadium. Weathers rushed for 196 yards that afternoon.
-- Warden is the first Auggie in recent memory to rush the ball 30 times or more in consecutive games. In fact, since Weathers' school-record 38-carry effort, only two Auggies had notched even 30 carries in a game before Warden's two efforts -- Marty Alger had 30 carries (137 yards) in a 26-24 home win over St. Olaf on Nov. 13, 1993, and Daubanton had 30 carries (128 yards) in a 20-7 home win over Carleton on Nov. 4, 1995.
-- Before Warden's two 100-plus yard rushing performances, it had been four years since an Auggie running back had reached the century mark in back-to-back games. Daubanton was the last Auggie to do it, when he rushed for 128 yards on 30 carries in a 20-7 home win over Carleton on Nov. 4, 1995, and followed that effort with a 102-yard, 26-carry effort in a 20-12 win over St. Olaf at the Metrodome on Nov. 10, 1995. The Augsburg record for consecutive 100-yard rushing games is four, set by Alger in 1992.
-- Warden has 258 yards on 63 carries after two games this year. The single-season school record for rushing attempts was 217, by Wayne Graves in 1973, and the single-season record for rushing yards is 1,011, set by Alger in 1992. If he keeps up his current pace, Warden could break both records with a 315-carry, 1,290-yard season.
-- And perhaps most important to Warden and the Auggies, Augsburg has won its last 11 games when it has had a player rush for 100 yards or more, dating back to 1992.
HOME TURF, NIGHT GAMES FRIENDLY TO AUGSBURG: Augsburg has the only artificial-turf playing surface among MIAC schools, and one of just three among Minnesota colleges (the University of Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth are the others). And Augsburg is the only MIAC school to regularly schedule night home games, aside from the games played at the end of the season in the Metrodome. Under Osberg, Augsburg has been successful both on the rug of Anderson-Nelson Field and under the lights.
Since Osberg became head coach of the Auggies in 1991, Augsburg is 29-18 in games played on artificial turf (including all Auggie home games, eight games at the Metrodome and one game in the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.). The Auggies have a home record of 23-15 at Anderson-Nelson Field since 1991. Augsburg has played 14 games at night (5 p.m. or later; 10 at home, one on the road, five in the Metrodome) since 1991, and Augsburg's record is 9-5 in those contests.
Since Anderson-Nelson Field opened in 1984, Augsburg's home record is 26-42-1 and 32-51-1 on artificial turf. Augsburg's overall record since 1984 is 49-102-1.
SCOUTING THE OLES: St. Olaf has had a rough start to its 1999 campaign, with an 0-2 record entering Saturday's game at Augsburg. The Oles lost theier season-opener 21-14 to Carthage (Wis.) in Northfield, and dropped a 33-3 decision to St. Thomas in the MIAC opener last week, also at Northfield. Against the Tommies last week, The Oles struggled to move the ball offensively for the vast majority of the game with just 97 yards of total offense (51 passing, 46 rushing), while the Tommies took advantage of four Ole fumbles to amass 389 total yards. St. Olaf's lone score came on a 20-yard field goal by kicker Haakon Nelson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.). St. Thomas led the Oles 12-3 at the end of the first half.
Defensively, junior Jason Carlson (Jr., Virginia, Minn.) had 13 total tackles (four solo) and one sack to lead the Oles. Ben Dietrich (Sr., St. Ansgar, Iowa) had 10 tackles, while Cory Dingles (So., Gibbon, Minn.), Sven Bjorklund (Sr., Edina, Minn.) and Jeremy Young (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) contributed eight apiece.
The Oles are aiming for improvement from consecutive 2-8 finishes under new coach Paul Miller. With 16 starters returning and essentially the same team returning for the third year in a row, there is room for optimism in Northfield this year. So far, Chris Nickel (Jr., Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain HS) has filled the biggest hole for the Oles, at quarterback, but Miller has tabbed Joe Hammond (So., Neillsville, Wis.) as his starter against the Auggies on Saturday. Hammond saw his first action in relief last week, and failed to complete a pass. Protecting him will be one of the largest offensive lines in the MIAC, with all five starters returning and averaging 273 pounds a man. Their defense is also strong, Osberg said.
"St. Olaf has a good defense and their offensive front is large," Osberg said. "Their defense has kept them in games. They haven't shown a lot on offense yet, but they're certainly capable of it. St. Olaf is strong defensively and they're going to be a good test for us."
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg travels to Collegeville for the first time since 1996 next Saturday (10/2) for a contest at MIAC favorite St. John's. Game time is 1 p.m. and the game will be aired locally on KYCR-AM 1570. St. Olaf will host Bethel at Manitou Field in Northfield next Saturday at 1 p.m.
