Men's Basketball --Augsburg 84, St. John's 80
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/19/00) -- Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures, as Augsburg College rallied in the second half for an 84-76 win over host Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Wednesday at Hutton Arena.
Augsburg trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half before cutting the Hamline lead to 14 points, 47-33 at halftime. The Auggies outscored the Pipers by a 51-29 margin in the second half.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 9-4 overall and 8-2 in the MIAC, moving into a first-place tie with St. Thomas (11-3 overall, 8-2 MIAC), which was idle Wednesday. The Auggies and Tommies are a half-game ahead of St. John's (11-2 overall, 7-2 MIAC), whose game against Macalester was postponed to Jan. 24, due to a snowstorm that hit central and southern Minnesota on Wednesday night.
Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS), who set Augsburg's school record for career three-pointers last week, nailed three more as part of a 16-point night. Van Rossum now has 197 three-pointers on his career.
Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) scored 13 points while notching five steals and two assists for the Auggies. Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) had 12 points.
Mike Robison (So., Richfield, Minn.) led the Pipers with 17 points, hitting eight-of-nine field goals. Tyler Gehrking (Jr., Byron, Minn.) had a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Jeff Campbell (So., New Richmond, Wis.) scored 12 points and contributed seven assists.
Augsburg plays at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (1/22), while Hamline hosts Bethel. Both games are at 3 p.m.
