Men's Basketball -- Augsburg 71, St. Mary's 60
MINNEAPOLIS (1/26/00) -- Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points, as Augsburg College rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit to beat St. Mary's University 71-60 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Monday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 12-5 overall and 11-3 in the MIAC, remaining in second place in the conference race, a game behind league-leader St. Thomas (15-3 overall, 12-2 MIAC). St. Mary's, which beat the Auggies 72-66 in Winona on Jan. 3, drops to 6-12 overall and 6-8 in the MIAC.
The Auggies trailed by as many as 13 points -- 33-20 with 6:06 remaining in the first half. St. Mary's led 33-30 at halftime.
The Auggies used a 21-5 run over a six-minute span midway through the second half to take a commanding 57-45 lead with 6:30 remaining. Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had six points in the run, as did Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) -- on two 3-pointers. Beckendorf had five points in the Auggie run.
Reed and Van Rossum had 13 points apiece, Van Rossum hitting three 3-pointers and Reed contributing eight assists, five steals and a blocked shot. Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) scored 14 points, adding a team-high seven rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Beckendorf had six rebounds and three assists.
St. Mary's was paced by all-conference forward Ryan Rankin (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy), who had 17 points. Rankin hit 7-of-8 free throws, as the Cardinals connected on 11 of their 12 free-throw attempts.
Nick Michaels (Fr., Dyer, Ind./Mt. Carmel HS) had 17 points -- 11 in the first half -- for the Cardinals and Jason Dzick (So., Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) had 14 points and six rebounds. Andy Bohnker (Fr., Story City, Iowa/Roland-Story HS) had a team-high seven rebounds.
Augsburg plays at league-leader St. Thomas on Wednesday (2/2), while St. Mary's hosts St. Olaf. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
