Augsburg holds on to edge Macalester, 20-17

Football 10/14/00 -- Augsburg 20, Macalester 17

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/14/00) -- Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed 57 yards for the go-ahead score with 1:34 remaining in the game, and Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) preserved the win with an interception in the end zone with 12 seconds remaining, giving Augsburg College a 20-17 victory over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium.

Augsburg improves to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC with the win, breaking a three-game losing streak. Macalester drops to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the MIAC. Augsburg has won the last 10 games in a row in the all-time series against the Scots, a series now knotted at 30-30-2.

The Auggies rallied from deficits twice, as the Scots held a 17-13 lead through most of the fourth quarter. The Scots took the lead on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Aaron Quitmeyer (Sr., Williston, N.D.) to David Schumacher (Sr., Minot, N.D./Bishop Ryan HS) on the last play of the third quarter.

Augsburg could not forge ahead until the closing minutes, as four of its drives ended with two punts and two turnovers on downs. But the Auggies had a final chance at winning the game, when Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) recovered a Quitmeyer fumble at the Augsburg 35-yard line with 1:33 left.

An eight-yard pass from Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to John Rotter (Sr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) put the ball at the Augsburg 43-yard line, and two plays later, Warden turned an off-tackle play into a score, sprinting to the left sidelines and eluding several Macalester defenders along the way to the go-ahead touchdown. The 57-yard scoring run was the longest of Warden's career.

Macalester started its final drive at its own 30-yard-line, but was pushed back to the 17 on a holding penalty. But Quitmeyer completed three straight passes to put the ball at the Augsburg 46. Defensive lineman Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) sacked Quitmeyer for a seven-yard loss to the Macalester 47, but on the next play, Quitmeyer found Steve Derrington (Fr., Amery, Wis.) on the left sideline with a 48-yard pass to the Augsburg 5 with 25 seconds to play and Macalester out of time outs.

A pass-interference penalty against the Auggies in the end zone put the ball at the 1-yard-line with 22 seconds left, but Auggie defensive back Luke Wittrock (Jr., Boone, Iowa) broke up Quitmeyer's next pass attempt to the end zone, and on the final pass attempt, to Schumacher in the right corner of the end zone, Wittrock tipped the pass away and it was picked off by Peroutka with 12 seconds left to preserve the Auggie win.

Neither team could not establish a solid offensive rhythm in the first half, as the Auggies led 6-3 on two field goals by Matt Van Alstine (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), while Russell Bradley-Cook (Jr., New York, N.Y./Bronx School of Science) had the Scots' points on a field goal in the closing seconds of the first half.

In the third quarter, the Scots forged ahead, completing a 10-play, 91-yard drive with a 26-yard scoring pass from Quitmeyer to Ty O'Connell (Jr., Helena, Mont./Capital HS) with 6:51 remaining in the third quarter. But on the Auggies' next drive, two long Warden runs (17 and 18 yards) put the ball on the Macalester 42-yard line, and on the next play, Tetzloff connected with Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 5:52 remaining. Johnson eluded the Scot defender and juggled the ball twice before hauling it in for the score to put the Auggies ahead 13-10.

The Scots closed the third quarter with an eight-play, 68-yard drive, culminating in Schumacher's 45-yard touchdown reception that closed the quarter with the Scots ahead 17-13.

Macalester outgained Augsburg by a 370-310-yard margin in total offense, as Quitmeyer threw for 313 yards, completing 18 of 39 passes. Augsburg mustered 165 yards of passing from Tetzloff, completing 10 of 38 passes. The Auggies had a season-high 145 yards of rushing in the contest.

Warden rushed for 143 yards on 24 carries, his season-high this year. The total gives him 1,561 career rushing yards on 423 carries, putting him into second place in school history in career rushes and fifth place in school history in career rushing yardage. Wayne Graves (1970-73) holds the school record with 497 career rushes, while Marty Alger (1991-95) has the school record for rushing yardage with 2,226 yards. Just four Auggies have ever had 400 or more rushes and just five Auggies have ever rushed for more than 1,500 yards in their careers.

Johnson had five receptions for 99 yards, a season high for an Auggie receiver this year.

Macalester was paced by the rushing of Grant Heuett (Jr., Pueblo, Colo./South HS), who had 18 carries for 82 yards. Schumacher led all receivers with six catches for 112 yards, while O'Connell had five catches for 95 yards.

On defense, Wittrock, Kurt Werk (Sr., Herman, Minn./West Central HS) and Shaun McCoy (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) had eight tackles apiece. Chappuis had three sacks in the game, giving him five on the season and 18.5 in his career, putting him in third place all-time in career sacks in school history. Bob Anderson (1992-95) holds the school record with 28.5 career sacks. Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) added two quarterback sacks, as Auggie defenders sacked Quitmeyer eight times.

Andrew Porter (So., Rogers, Minn./Elk River HS) led the Scots with nine tackles and one sack, giving him a team-high 10 sacks this season. Nick Fruge (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) had eight tackles and a sack, and Lee Dooley (Sr., Tuttle, Okla.) had seven tackles.

Augsburg hosts Gustavus Adolphus College (3-3 overall, 3-2 MIAC) next Saturday (10/21) at 1 p.m. at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field, while Macalester plays at the University of St. Thomas (3-3 overall, 3-2 MIAC) next Saturday, also at 1 p.m.

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 10th season and currently has a 47-49 career mark. Macalester coach Dennis Czech (Macalester '83) is in his third year and has a 5-20 career record.

RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped its third game in a row, 16-0 to St. Thomas, last Saturday at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field, while Macalester fell to 0-4 in the MIAC with a 48-6 loss at league-leader St. John's last Saturday.

SERIES: Augsburg leads the all-time series 30-29-2. The Auggies have won the last nine games in a row in the series. Macalester's last victory over the Auggies was a 13-10 win at the Metrodome on Nov. 10, 1990. Macalester's last win over the Auggies at Macalester Stadium was a 30-6 triumph on Oct. 18, 1986. Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg is 9-0 against the Scots in his career.

LAST YEAR: Brian Warden rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns as Augsburg claimed a 27-7 victory at Macalester on Oct. 16, 1999. Warden had scoring rushes of 11, 24 and eight yards as Augsburg led the game from start to finish. John Goodale, starting his second game in a row at quarterback, completed 17 of 28 passes for 207 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His eight-yard touchdown pass to John Rotter opened the scoring.Augsburg put up 374 yards of total offense compared to 194 yards for the Scots. Aaron Quitmeyer threw for just 112 yards for the Scots, including a 31-yard touchdown pass to David Schumacher late in the first half. Jake Kern and Mitch Theisen led the Auggies with six tackles apiece. Matt Chappuis had four quarterback sacks to lead the Auggies in the contest.

AUGGIES DROP SECOND IN A ROW AT ST. OLAF: Jake Barkley (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) rushed for 130 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, as his University of St. Thomas football team cruised to a 16-0 victory over host Augsburg College Saturday afternoon at Anderson-Nelson Field.

Barkley extended his streak of 100-yard rushing games to four with his performance Saturday, gaining 130 yards on 22 carries. He now has 797 rushing yards on 107 carries this season.

St. Thomas dominated the game, outgaining the Auggies 299 yards to 153. The Tommie defense held Augsburg to just five net yards of rushing in the game, while St. Thomas notched 196 rushing yards. The game was a sloppy one, as the teams combined for 25 penalties for 262 yards and had 12 fumbles, of which six were lost on turnovers (four by St. Thomas, two by Augsburg).

Augsburg's offense was held in check for the entire game, as the Auggies were held to just one of 17 on third downs and could not convert on two fourth-down tries. With the shutout loss, Augsburg has now been held without a touchdown for the last 11 quarters in a row, nearly three games. Augsburg converted two field goals in last week's 28-6 loss at St. Olaf and scored its last touchdown in the first quarter of its 40-7 loss at St. John's two weeks ago.

Nick Ambrasas (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS), making his first start at quarterback for the Tommies this season, threw for 103 yards, completing nine of 20 passes with one interception. Andrew Hilliard (So., Woodbury, Minn.) caught two passes for 51 yards, and Jon Learn (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had four catches for 39 yards.

Barkley scored his touchdown at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter, and the Tommies held a 7-0 halftime lead. Early in the third quarter, Augsburg's Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) recovered a St. Thomas fumble at the Augsburg 1-yard line. But three plays later, Auggie quarterback Dave Fransen (So., Farmington, Minn.) was sacked in the end zone by Sean O'Leary (So., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln HS) for a safety, giving the Tommies a 9-0 lead.

Conor Casey (Jr., Washburn, Wis.) blocked an Auggie punt in the fourth quarter, giving the Tommies the ball at the Augsburg 2-yard line. On the next play, Nick Whitehead (So., East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis HS) rushed for a two-yard touchdown, securing the victory for the Tommies.

Augsburg used two quarterbacks in the game, as regular starter Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) was forced to miss the game due to a groin injury. John Goodale (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.), making his third career start, completed 10 of 19 passes for 97 yards. Fransen threw for 51 yards, completing five of 13 passes with one interception. John Rotter's (Sr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) 43 yards on four receptions led the Auggies.

Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had 10 tackles (nine solo) to lead the Auggies, while Scott Archambault (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had eight tackles (six solo).

RECORD-WATCHING: Running back Brian Warden has moved into the top five in two Augsburg career rushing categories, and could become just the fourth Auggie to rush for 2,000 career yards this season. He enters Saturday's game with 282 rushing yards on 71 carries. On his career, Warden has 399 carries for 1,418 yards, putting him in fourth place all-time in career carries and fifth all-time in career rushing yards.

Wayne Graves set the career carries mark at Augsburg from 1970-73 with 497, while Marty Alger set the career rushing yardage mark with 2,226 yards from 1991-95. Warden set Augsburg's single-season rushes record with 232 carries last year, while his 858 rushing yards were fifth-best in school history (Alger's 1,011 rushing yards in 1992 is the school single-season record). Warden has eight career rushing touchdowns; the career record, 18, was set by Dan Roff from 1978-81.

Some other records that current Auggies are pursuing -- Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) has 5.5 sacks; the single-season record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995. Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has two sacks and 15.5 on his career to put him fifth-best all-time; Anderson's 28.5 from 1992-95 is the record.

GUNDERSON TO MISS GAME WITH CONCUSSION, TETZLOFF SLATED TO RETURN: Augsburg starting strong safety Shane Gunderson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) will miss Saturday's game against Macalester because of a slight concussion suffered against St. Thomas last week. Josh Larsen (Sr., Morristown, Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown HS) will start in his place. Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), Augsburg's starting quarterback the past three seasons, will return to the starting lineup against the Scots. He missed last week's loss to the Tommies with a groin injury.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: It may be too early to call this game a "must-win" affair for the Auggies, but it is such a game in order for the Auggies to preserve hopes of finishing with an above-.500 record for a school-record fourth season in a row. And it certainly is a "need-to-win" game for the Auggies to turn their season's fortunes around, trying to escape the stigma of three straight losses and 11 consecutive quarters without a touchdown.

"I can't figure it out. We're missing something and I don't know exactly what it is," said Augsburg coach Jack Osberg. "Hopefully, we'll find it this week and put something together. It doesn't matter who we play. We have to make a stand this week and get out of this tailspin. We've got to pick it up on offense, get a better balance between the rush and the pass."

Augsburg was limited to just 153 yards of total offense in the shutout loss to the Tommies, just the second shutout loss the Auggies have suffered since 1994 and only the seventh in Osberg's 10 seasons at Augsburg. Having to use two backup quarterbacks against the Tommies may have been a factor, but the Auggies have yet to produce a dominant offensive performance this season, even in its lone win of the year, a 24-15 triumph over Carleton on Sept. 16.

Augsburg's defense, however, has played well, currently ranked third in the MIAC in total defense (287.5 yards allowed per game). Defensive back Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has led the way with 34 tackles (19 solo). Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.), in his first full season as a defensive lineman, leads the team with 5.5 sacks. However, the defense has been prone to giving up the "big play," Osberg said, a trend that has to stop in order to claim a win over the Scots this week.

SCOUTING THE SCOTS: Under third-year head coach Dennis Czech, the Scots have shown steady improvement, both in performance on the field and in numbers of players. More than 50 players came out for the Scots this season, a high for the past several years. Though the Scots enter the game with a 1-4 overall mark and 0-4 MIAC mark, they have always played the Auggies tough, in particular at Macalester Stadium.

"They always play us well," Augsburg coach Jack Osberg said. "They have played well above their games when we play them there. They will probably try to disrupt us early, while we have to assume control early. We have to stay within ourselves and focus on what we can do to win."

The Scots have been led by quarterback Aaron Quitmeyer (Sr., Willistown, N.D.), who has quietly become one of the top quarterbacks in the MIAC. He has completed 71 passes for 841 yards and four touchdowns this season, and is fifth in the conference in both passing and total offense (160.5 yards per game).
