Football 10/21/00 -- Gustavus 20, Augsburg 13 (2 OT)
MINNEAPOLIS (10/21/00) -- Matt Gahlon (Jr., Dellwood, Minn.) caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Joe Thorvig (Jr., Stacy, Minn.) in the second overtime, and Brad Arndt (So., Woodbury, Minn.) intercepted an Augsburg pass to win the game, giving Gustavus Adolphus College a 20-13, two-overtime victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Gustavus improves to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC, while Augsburg drops to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.
Arndt's interception, off a tip by Kevin Firkus (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) on an Auggie pass to the end zone on the first play of Augsburg's second overtime session, ended the game and gave the Gusties the win.
The teams entered the overtime tied at 6-6. Augsburg had the ball first, and scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to
Desman Oakley (Sr., Indianola, Iowa).
In the Gusties' first overtime possession, the Auggie defense held firm and forced a fourth-down-and-10 play from the 13-yard line, but Thorvig was able to complete a scoring pass to Brett Boese (Fr., Rochester, Minn.), which forced the second extra session.
Gustavus took the first possession of the second overtime and scored in four plays, converting a Thorvig-to-Gahlon 15-yard pass to the corner of the end zone for the score.
Augsburg led 3-0 at halftime on a
Matt Van Alstine (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) 22-yard field goal. The Gusties tied the game on a 37-yard field goal by Christian White (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), and White's 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave the Gusties a 6-3 lead.
Augsburg used a 13-play, 50-yard drive to tie the game, as Van Alstine converted a 35-yard field goal.
In the final minute of regulation, Gustavus drove the ball 61 yards to the Augsburg 11-yard line, where it set up for a potential 28-yard, game-winning field goal by White. His kick, with six seconds remaining, was wide right, but the Auggies were penalized for running into the kicker, putting the ball at the Augsburg six-yard line with two seconds left. White's 23-yard field goal attempt also was wide right, forcing overtime.
The overtime game, Augsburg's fourth in the last four years since the NCAA instituted overtime in 1996, was the second two-overtime contest between the Auggies and Gusties in history. In 1997, Augsburg and Gustavus played a two-overtime game in St. Peter, Minn., with Augsburg winning 41-35.
Gustavus outgained Augsburg by a 343-336 yardage margin, and Augsburg's 224 rushing yards was the most in a single game for the Auggies since a 253-yard rushing performance in a 56-22 win over Bethel on Nov. 7, 1997.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) led all players with 132 carries on 25 rushes. He now has 1,693 career rushing yards on 448 career carries, putting him in second place in Augsburg's all-time career carry list and in fourth place on Augsburg's all-time rushing yardage list.
Thorvig completed 27 of 47 passes for 253 yards. Boese had 97 receiving yards on five catches, while Andy Traetow (So., Jackson, Minn.) caught eight passes for 57 yards and Ryan Hoag (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) caught five passes for 55 yards.
Tetzloff completed 14 passes for 112 yards for the Auggies.
Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had three catches for 34 yards to lead the Auggies.
Brian Bergstrom (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 19 tackles (11 solo) to lead the Gusties, while Andy Barnick (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) had 14 tackles (11 solo) and Matt Dierks (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) had 11 tackles (eight solo).
Augsburg's defense was paced by
Shane Gunderson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Joe Souba (Sr., Hayward, Wis.), who had 12 tackles apiece. Souba also had a sack, as did
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) and
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.).
Augsburg plays at Hamline next Saturday (10/29) at 1 p.m., while Gustavus hosts St. Thomas on Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.

Football 10/21/00 -- Gustavus at Augsburg Game Notes
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (2-4 overall, 2-3 MIAC) host Gustavus Adolphus College (3-3 overall, 3-2 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field (2,000) in Minneapolis, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 10th season and currently has a 48-49 career mark. Gustavus Adolphus coach Jay Schoenebeck (Gustavus '80) is in his seventh year and has a 32-34 overall record.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season. Gustavus broadcast is on KRBI-AM 1310, FM 105.5 in St. Peter, Minn., with Clay Kepner on the call.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg broke a three-game losing streak with a 20-17 win at Macalester College last Saturday. Gustavus dropped to 3-3 overall with a 38-17 home loss to St. John's University last Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.
SERIES: Gustavus leads the all-time series 45-12-0. Augsburg's last win in the series was a 41-35, two-overtime victory at St. Peter on Oct. 18, 1997. Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg is 3-5 against Gustavus in his career since 1992 (the 1991 game, in Osberg's first year at Augsburg, was cancelled due to the infamous Halloween snowstorm).
LAST YEAR: Travis Prunty rushed for three touchdowns and Ryan Britz rushed for two more, leading Gustavus to a convincing 38-12 win on Oct. 9, 1999 at Anderson-Nelson Field. Britz rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries, while Prunty rushed for 95 yards on 26 carries to lead a Gustie offensive onslaught. Gustavus outgained Augsburg by a 422-179 margin in total offense. Joe Thorvig threw for 180 yards, completing 20 of 33 passes with one interception. Augsburg's
Paul Tetzloff was limited to just 104 passing yards, completing just eight of 15 attempts with one interception before being relieved in the fourth quarter. He was sacked six times, including three by Gustavus' Tim Sundby. Augsburg's
Brian Warden had 53 rushing yards on 18 carries.
John Rotter had two touchdowns for the Auggies, on a six-yard pass and a one-yard run.
AUGGIES EDGE MACALESTER 20-17 IN FINAL MINUTE:
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed 57 yards for the go-ahead score with 1:34 remaining in the game, and
Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) preserved the win with an interception in the end zone with 12 seconds remaining, giving Augsburg a 20-17 victory at Macalester last Saturday.
The Auggies rallied from deficits twice, as the Scots held a 17-13 lead through most of the fourth quarter. Augsburg could not forge ahead until the closing minutes, when
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) recovered a Scot fumble at the Augsburg 35-yard line with 1:33 left.
An eight-yard pass from
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to
John Rotter (Sr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) put the ball at the Augsburg 43-yard line, and two plays later, Warden turned an off-tackle play into a score, sprinting to the left sidelines and eluding several Macalester defenders along the way to the go-ahead touchdown. The 57-yard scoring run was the longest of Warden's career.
Macalester started its final drive at its own 30-yard-line, but was pushed back to the 17 on a holding penalty. But the Scots completed three straight passes to put the ball at the Augsburg 46. Defensive lineman
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) got a quarterback sack for a seven-yard loss to the Macalester 47, but on the next play the Scots completed a 48-yard pass to the Augsburg 5 with 25 seconds to play and Macalester out of time outs.
A pass-interference penalty against the Auggies in the end zone put the ball at the 1-yard-line with 22 seconds left, but Auggie defensive back
Luke Wittrock (Jr., Boone, Iowa) broke up the next pass attempt to the end zone, and on the final pass attempt, to Schumacher in the right corner of the end zone, Wittrock tipped the pass away and it was picked off by Peroutka with 12 seconds left to preserve the win.
In the third quarter, the Auggies rallied from a 10-6 deficit to take another lead. Two long Warden runs (17 and 18 yards) put the ball on the Macalester 42-yard line, and on the next play, Tetzloff connected with
Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 5:52 remaining. Johnson eluded the Scot defender and juggled the ball twice before hauling it in for the score to put the Auggies ahead 13-10. Johnson had five receptions for 99 yards, a season high for an Auggie receiver this year.
On defense, Wittrock,
Kurt Werk (Sr., Herman, Minn./West Central HS) and
Shaun McCoy (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) had eight tackles apiece. Chappuis had three sacks in the game.
Dave Sherry (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) added two quarterback sacks, as Auggie defenders sacked Quitmeyer eight times.
"We have to look at the win as a critical, or important, win for us," said Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg. "It's a win we hope to build on, since Macalester played us tough and they always play us tough at their place."
RECORD-WATCHING: Running back
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) is in pursuit of several Augsburg rushing records. He enters today's game with 423 career rushes for 1,561 yards, putting him in second place in school history in career rushes and fifth in career rushing yards. Warden has 115 carries this season for 425 yards; last year, he set a single-season school record with 232 rushing attempts. The career mark for carries is 497, set by Wayne Graves from 1970-73; the career rushing record is 2,226 yards, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Just four Auggies have ever had 400 or more career rushes and just five Auggies have ever rushed for more than 1,500 yards in their careers.
Some defensive records that current Auggies are pursuing --
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) has six-and-a-half sacks; the single-season record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995.
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has five sacks and 18.5 on his career to put him third-best all-time; Anderson's 28.5 from 1992-95 is the record.
AUGGIES TOUGH AT HOME, ON FAKE GRASS: At Anderson-Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 26-19 record since 1991. Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 29-46-1 at home. On artificial turf (including games at the Metrodome and Fargodome), Augsburg is 33-22 since 1991 and 36-53-1 since 1984.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: While people like to say that every game is a "must-win" game, last week's Augsburg game at Macalester could have qualified as one. The Auggies had lost three games in a row and needed a victory to improve attitudes going into Saturday's important home game against Gustavus Adolphus.
Mission accomplished, though the Auggies struggled to a 20-17, come-from-behind win at Macalester last Saturday, a game not decided until the final seconds.
Brian Warden's (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) 57-yard touchdown run with 1:34 left, combined with
Brent Peroutka's (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) interception in the end zone with 12 seconds remaining, preserved the win for the Auggies and gives the team renewed confidence going into this week's game against the Gusties.
"We have to build upon the opportunity we had to come from behind twice against Macalester, then be able to hold onto the lead with our defense," said Auggie head coach
Jack Osberg. "It's a game where we didn't play a great game on defense, but we were able to hold when it mattered most. We need to really rally around that come-from-behind win. Maybe that will be the spark we need to get back on track for the rest of the season."
SCOUTING THE GUSTIES: Gustavus Adolphus College enters the contest with a 3-3 overall record, after dropping a 38-17 home contest to St. John's University last Saturday.
The Gusties trailed 31-3 after three quarters, but rallied late with two touchdown passes from Joe Thorvig (Jr., Stacy, Minn.), a six-yard pass to Brady Brau (Sr., Lucan, Minn.) and a 15-yard pass to Brett Boese (Fr., Rochester, Minn.).
Thorvig, who played his freshman season at Augsburg before transferring to Gustavus last year, has become one of the top quarterbacks in the MIAC. He leads the league in total offense (238 yards per game) and passing yards (1,162, 232 yards per game). While he has seven touchdown passes in conference play, he also has a league-high 11 interceptions.
"We need to shut him down," said Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg. "Thorvig is a good passer, and they're a solid passing team. We know this has become a good rivalry. We need to get turnovers and take advantage of them, and we can't give up the big plays."
Running back Andy Trateow (So., Jackson, Minn.) has rushed for five touchdowns this season and averages 64.8 rushing yards per game (77 ypg in league play).
On defense, Brian Bergstrom (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) has been the team's leader, with 73 tackles (32 solo) and five sacks. Linebacker Andy Barnick (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) has 49 tackles (17 solo) and four sacks, and Josh Peterson (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) leads the team with 10 tackles for loss and eight sacks.
MILESTONES REACHED FOR GUSTAVUS, ST. THOMAS THIS WEEKEND: There are two milestones that will be reached in MIAC football this weekend. The University of St. Thomas is playing its 800th football game when it hosts Macalester, and Gustavus Adolphus College is playing its 700th football game against Augsburg. Gustavus joins four other MIAC schools in the 700-game club, including Carleton, Hamline, Macalester, and St. Thomas. The Gusties are the 114th Division III football program (out of over 300) to reach the 700th game plateau. Carleton reached the 800-game milestone earlier this year. The University of Minnesota has played the most games of any Minnesota school, 1,031.
Gustavus football dates back to 1896, when the Gusties played and won their first ever game against Saint Peter High School by a score of 8-0. In 1902, Gustavus played its first intercollegiate contest against Mankato Normal (now Minnesota State University, Mankato), walking away with an 11-6 victory. After a six-year ban on athletics (thirteen years for football) due to an administrative decision that sports were interfering with academic achievement, the Gustie football program resumed play in 1920 with the inception of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Since then, the Gusties have won or shared 22 MIAC titles, and compiled a record of 412-264-21 in 84 seasons of play which ranks 20th in all-time winning percentage among Division III schools at .606.
Compared to other schools in Minnesota, Augsburg is a relative newcomer to intercollegiate football. The Auggies are playing their 575th game this afternoon. Augsburg is in its 69th season of football; the school began the program in 1926, dropped the sport from 1935-38, had a varsity team from 1939-42, and dropped it again in 1943-44 before restoring the team in 1945. All-time, Augsburg is 176-378-20.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg returns to the road next Saturday with an MIAC game at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. Game time is 1 p.m. Gustavus hosts the University of St. Thomas next Saturday at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn., also at 1 p.m.
