MORRIS, Minn. (12/2/00) -- Augsburg College wrestlers earned 11 individual championships at the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougar Open wrestling meet Saturday. No team scores were kept at the event, and Augsburg wrestlers competed with unattached status.

Darin Bertram (Jr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS) earned the meet's Outstanding Wrestler award with three victories in the 125-pound weight class for the championship. Included in those wins was a 4-2 overtime triumph over Montana State-Northern's Alex Valdez, rated second in the nation in the NAIA national rankings at 125. Bertram, who has finished second in the nation his first two seasons in the Division III national meet, is the top-ranked 125-pounder in the nation in the preseason Division III national rankings.

Brad Fisher (Jr., Austin, Minn.), an All-American two seasons ago, claimed the title in the 141-pound class, as did defending national qualifier Tony Abbott (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) at 165 pounds. Two newcomers, freshmen Chris McAlpine (Fr., Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) and Mike Cunningham (Fr., Austin, Minn.), earned championships at the meet, McAlpine at 149 pounds and Cunningham at 157.

At 174, Nick Slack (Jr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Joe Moon (Fr., Ellendale, Minn./NHREG HS) shared the meet title, as did Nik Lewandowski (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) and Clint Hodgdon (Fr., Ostrander, Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander HS) at 184, and Ben Bauer (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Mark Anderson (Sr., Corcoran, Minn./Rockford HS) at heavyweight.

Augsburg travels to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest State University in a dual meet on Tuesday (12/5).
