Men's Basketball 12/9/00 -- Augsburg 78, Hamline 75
MINNEAPOLIS (12/6/00) --
Jeff Willihnganz (Fr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) scored 19 points and
Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) had 16 points as Augsburg College held off host Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hamline's Hutton Arena.
Augsburg improves to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in MIAC play, while Hamline remains winless at 0-6 overall and 0-2 in MIAC action.
Willihnganz connected on three 3-pointers, while Hinze's four field goals all came from beyond the three-point arc. Augsburg hit eight 3-pointers in the game.
Hamline had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but a three-point attempt failed at the buzzer, preserving the Auggie victory.
In all, 12 Auggies saw playing time, and nine scored.
Nate Hoerr (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 11 points and
Tommy Chatman (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Jordan HS) had seven points and four rebounds.
Matt Davis (Sr., Marshall, Minn.) notched six points and a team-high nine rebounds, and
Josh Moberg (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Josh Natzel (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had six points each.
Hamline was paced by John Simonsen (Sr., Fairfax, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS), who scored 16 points and had six rebounds; Jim Miller (Jr., Annandale, Minn.), who scored 14 points and had eight rebounds, and Jerome Williams (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS), who scored 12 points. Mike Robison (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Augsburg returns to action during the holiday break, competing at the California Lutheran University Tournament in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Dec. 28-29. Hamline plays at Concordia-Moorhead next Saturday (12/16) at 4 p.m.
