Augsburg White Team wins Carleton Invite

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/12/00) -- Augsburg College's White Team claimed two individual titles and finished second in two more on Saturday, cruising to the team championship at the Carleton College Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday. The event, hosted by Carleton, was held at St. Olaf College's Skoglund Center.

Augsburg won the 12-team meet with 129.5 points, bettering second-place St. Olaf's 105.5 and Dana (Neb.) College's 95. In addition to the two champions and two second-place finishers, five Auggies finished third and one finished fourth.

Jeremy Jirele (So., Owatonna, Minn.), who won the individual title at 157 pounds, was named the outstanding wrestler of the meet. Jirele won four matches, including a pin in the championship match and a technical fall.

Brandon Eckert (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) won the individual title at 184 pounds, notching two pins. Eric Roth (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Jeremy Johnson (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) each finished second, at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively.

Paul Darda (Jr., Madison, Wis./Memorial HS, 133 pounds), Josh Barlage (So., Farmington, Minn., 174) and Mark Anderson (Jr., Corcoran, Minn./Rockford HS, HWT) all finished third, with Larry Lyden (So., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Matt Romsdahl (Sr., St. James, Minn.) sharing third place at 165. Mark Peterson (Jr., Eyota, Minn./Dover-Eyota HS) finished fourth at 157.

Augsburg completed its White Team season with this meet. The varsity squad has its final dual meet of the season on Sunday (2/13), when it competes at South Dakota State. The Auggies compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships Feb. 26 at Concordia-Moorhead.
