Van Rossum goes over 1,000-point mark -- Auggies top Hamline 82-70!

Men's Basketball -- Augsburg 82, Hamline 70

MINNEAPOLIS (2/14/00) -- Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) became the 15th player in Augsburg College history to score more than 1,000 points in his basketball career, as his 23 points led Augsburg to an 82-70 home win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Van Rossum broke the 1,000-point barrier on a three-pointer with 18:58 in the second half -- one of six 3-pointers the senior hit in the game. He now has 1,012 points and a school-record 236 three-pointers. He has hit six 3-pointers in his last three games in a row.

Van Rossum hit 13 of his 23 points -- and four of his 3-pointers -- in the second half, as the Auggies rallied from a 36-34 halftime deficit to take the lead midway through the second half. A 9-2 run over a two-minute stretch sealed the victory for the Auggies. The final margin of victory was the biggest lead in the game for the Auggies.

Augsburg improves to 16-7 overall and 15-5 in the MIAC with the win, finishing the regular season in second place in the conference standings. Hamline finishes the season 6-18 overall and 5-15 in the conference.

Augsburg will host St. John's (18-6 overall, 14-6 MIAC), the third-place finisher in the conference standings, in the semifinal round of the four-team MIAC playoffs on Thursday (2/24) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. Bethel (14-10 overall, 12-8 MIAC) will play at league regular-season champion St. Thomas (20-4 overall, 17-3 MIAC) in the other semifinal on Thursday. The conference playoff championship, pitting the semifinal winners playing at the highest remaining seed, will be Saturday (2/26) at 7:30 p.m. The MIAC's playoff champion receives an automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA Division III national tournament.
