Men's Basketball -- Augsburg 86, Macalester 75
MINNEAPOLIS (2/9/00) -- Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) and Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) led Augsburg College with 19 points each, as the host Auggies cruised to an 86-75 win over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 13-6 overall and 12-4 in the MIAC, remaining in the hunt for the MIAC regular-season championship. Augsburg moved into a second-place tie in the MIAC standings with St. John's (16-4 overall, 12-4 MIAC), which was idle Wednesday night.
Macalester, which entered the game in a tie for fourth place in the conference, drops to 8-12 overall and 8-8 in the MIAC. The win is Augsburg's 21st in a row over Macalester, dating back to the 1989-90 season.
Augsburg used a 19-3 run midway through the first half to take a 29-13 lead at the 8:43 mark. Augsburg led 51-29 at halftime, and pulled out to lead by as many as 28 points with 7:05 to play in the contest. Macalester eventually cut the lead as Augsburg used their entire bench in the game.
All 14 Auggies who dressed for the game saw playing time, and 11 players scored. In addition to his 19 points, Beckendorf led the Auggies with nine rebounds.
Van Rossum, Augsburg's career leader in three-point shooting, nailed four 3-pointers to improve his school-record career total to 216. He now has 50 three-pointers this season, the eighth-most in a single season in school history.
Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had 13 points and four steals, and Nate Hoerr (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.), a junior college transfer making his first Augsburg start, had 11 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Macalester was paced by Patrick Russell (So., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), who had 20 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Nick Falk (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Wade Bronnenberg (So., Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Jumaane Saunders (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./The Hackley School) had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Augsburg plays at St. John's on Saturday (2/12) at 7:30 p.m. (note the time change), while Macalester plays at Gustavus on Saturday at 3 p.m
