MINNEAPOLIS (3/30/00) --
Nic Shelby (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) pitched a brilliant three-hitter to pick up the victory for Augsburg College in the first game, but the Auggies were slammed in the second contest for a split with Concordia University-St. Paul in a nonconference baseball doubleheader on Thursday morning at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
The Auggies won the first contest 10-1, with Concordia-St. Paul taking the second game 17-3. The Auggies are now 3-8 on the season, while Concordia-St. Paul moves to 2-2 overall.
After allowing two hits and a run in the first inning, Shelby was solid the rest of the way in the first game, only allowing a second-inning hit and three other baserunners (one on an error, two on walks) the rest of the way. Shelby struck out six while walking two -- both in the seventh inning.
Augsburg slammed five extra-base hits off of three Golden Bear pitchers.
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a triple and double to drive in three runs,
Adam Dittrich (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) had a triple,
Jim Jansen (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had a two-run double and
Dave Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) had a run-scoring double. Marsh and Sherry went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Augsburg to the first-game win.
Greg Miller (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) scored the lone run for the Golden Bears in the first contest. Tom Brandt (Fr., Crest Hill, Ill.) took the loss on the mound for Concordia-St. Paul.
A five-run first inning and seven-run fourth inning gave Concordia-St. Paul the easy win in the second game. The Golden Bears manufactured runs, as11 of their 14 hits were singles. Travis Anderson (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) had a three-run triple, Joe Schallenberger (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) had a triple and Trent Grams (Sr., Chisago City, Minn.) had a double.
Anthony Zecco (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) struck out two while walking two over six innings to pick up the win for the Golden Bears on the mound, with Grams pitching the final inning, striking out one.
Augsburg was forced to use five pitchers in the contest.
Matt Topp (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) took the loss, allowing six runs -- but only one earned -- in the first two innings.
Mike Schwalen (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) had a triple and scored for the Auggies, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Jansen and
Sam Gross (Fr., Springfield, Minn.) scored for the Auggies in the second game.
Jared Trost (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had a double.
Ausburg opens the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season on Saturday (4/1) at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Macalester. Concordia-St. Paul returns to action with a nonconference doubleheader Saturday at 6 p.m. against Minnesota State-Mankato at the Metrodome.
