ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/1/00) -- Big innings spelled the difference for Macalester College in a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Macalester. The Scots won the first game 8-6, then took the second 7-5. Augsburg drops to 3-10 overall while Macalester improves to 5-9.
A six-run fifth inning enabled the host Scots to rally from a 4-1 deficit and grab the lead. Macalester manufactured the runs, taking advantage of an error and two walks, combined with three singles off of starter
John Webb (Sr., Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) and reliever
Jeff Deeb (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS).
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) led the Auggies with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate in the first game, drving in two runs.
Jim Jansen (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) also drove in a run for Augsburg.
Adam Dittrich (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) led off the game with a solo home run for the Auggies.
Matt Soltvedt (Jr., Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Scots, while Damon Dahlheimer (So., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Tom Gillespie (Sr., Lake Park, Iowa/Harris-Lake Park HS) went the distance to pick up the pitching win in the first game, striking out six.
In the second game, a five-run first inning did in the Auggies, as Macalester pounded three doubles off of Auggie starter
Eric Mogenson (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) to build a lead they would not relinquish. Christian Blanck (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) struck out seven to pick up the win for the Scots.
David Sherry (So., Hastings, Minn.) led the Auggies with a solo home run, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Andy Odegaard (So., New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) went 2-for-2 with two run scored and two RBI for the Scots, while Scott Bell (Fr., Selah, Wash.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Augsburg travels to Wisconsin-Stout for two nine-inning games on Sunday (4/2/00) at 12 noon. Macalester hosts Concordia-St. Paul on Monday (4/3) at 3:30 p.m.
