MINNEAPOLIS (4/13/00) -- Designated hitter Kevin Fry (Fr., Helenville, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran HS) had a 5-for-10, 3-RBI afternoon, leading his University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team to a sweep over Augsburg College in a nonconference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Parade Stadium. The Pointers won the first game 13-2 and claimed a 12-9 win in the second contest.
With the win, UW-Stevens Point, the No. 23-ranked team in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, improves to 17-4 overall. The Pointers have now won 13 of their last 14 games. Augsburg, which has lost its last eight games in a row, drops to 4-19 overall.
In the first contest, the Pointers jumped out to a big early lead, holding a 7-1 advantage after two innings. The first nine hitters in a row reached base for the Pointers, taking advantage of just one hit, an error, four hit batters and two walks. Run-scoring triples by Rob Govek (Jr., Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) and Fry helped give the Pointers the large lead in the second.
Fry and Mike McCann (Jr., Antigo, Wis.) each went 3-for-5 at the plate in the first game for the Pointers, while Pat McCann (So., Antigo, Wis.) had two hits and Randy Reed (So., Appleton, Wis./Appleton East HS) had a double.
Augsburg had 11 hits off of three UW-Stevens Point pitchers, but could only muster two runs, stranding 11 runners on base.
Joe Seehusen (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored on a single by
Sam Gross (Fr., Springfield, Minn.) in the first, and
Nick Rosenow (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) hit a double and scored on a Dave McGree (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) single in the sixth.
Jared Szews (Fr., Birnamwood, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood HS) picked up the pitching win for the Pointers, striking out three in four innings of work. David Busse (Jr., Cambria, Wis./Cambria-Friesland HS) and Bill Verbick (So., Appleton, Wis./Appleton Xavier HS) also pitched for the Pointers.
Augsburg's
Jorin Tix (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) lasted just one-third of an inning and took the loss.
Russ Bauer (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) pitched well in relief, allowing just three earned runs and striking out four.
Kevin Petersen (Fr., Luck, Wis.) also pitched for the Auggies in the first game.
The second game was a slugfest, as the two teams combined for 25 hits -- 16 for UW-Stevens Point, nine for Augsburg.
The Pointers again jumped out to a huge early lead, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the first inning. A two-run triple by Nick Cahoon (Fr., Watertown, Wis.) was the big blast of the frame.
But the Auggies matched the Pointers with a big inning of their own in the second, sending nine men to the plate and scoring five runs on four hits and three errors.
Adam Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had a double and scored,
Mike Schwalen (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) had a run-scoring double and scored a run, and
Ben Wilson (Fr., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had a run-scoring triple.
A three-run double by Matt Peetz (Fr., Spring Green, Wis./River Valley HS) put the Pointers ahead 9-5 in the third, and the Pointers scored a single run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to secure the win.
Schwalen had a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning for the Auggies, and
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had run-scoring doubles in the fifth and seventh inning to help keep the Auggies close. He scored two runs as well.
Stevens Point's No. 8 and 9 hitters -- Cahoon and Reed -- combined for a 7-for-8 performance at the plate in the second game. Cahoon went 3-for-4 and Reed went 4-for-4, each driving in three runs. Mike McCann, Peetz, Sam Molski (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH HS) and Fry added two hits apiece.
Schwalen, Storholm, Erickson and
Jared Trost (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had two hits apiece in the second game for the Auggies.
Jeremy Zimmerman (Fr., North Freedom, Wis./Baraboo HS) picked up the pitching win for the Pointers, striking out three in four innings of work. Three other pitchers worked an inning apiece in relief.
Chris Zweber (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) gave up six runs, but none were earned, in an inning of work for the Auggies.
Jared Lynch (So., Jordan, Minn.) and
Nick Haag (So., St. Paul, Minn./St. Agnes HS) pitched well in relief for the Auggies.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against St. Thomas on Saturday (4/15) at 1 p.m. at Parade Stadium. The doubleheader will serve as Augsburg's 75th anniversary of athletics' alumni celebration for baseball. UW-Stevens Point opens up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday at 12 noon.
