MINNEAPOLIS (4/17/00) --
Adam Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) drove home the tying and game-winning runs on a double in the seventh inning Monday, lifting Augsburg College to its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball victory of the season, a 3-2 triumph over host Concordia-Moorhead. The Auggies split the doubleheader with the Cobbers, losign the second game 7-2.
Augsburg moves to 5-20 overall and 1-9 in the MIAC with the doubleheader split, while Concordia is now 10-12 overall and 4-6 in the MIAC.
Down 2-1 going into the top half of the seventh inning,
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) reached base on a two-out double. Cobber pitcher Doug Muzik (Jr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) intentionally walked Auggie slugger
Rich Storholm (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) -- the third time Storholm was given a free pass in the game. Erickson, who had struck out, flied out and grounded out in his previous three at-bats, nailed a two-run double to send the Auggies to victory.
Nic Shelby (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) pitched a complete-game victory for the Auggies, striking out two while allowing just onewalk and six hits. Muzik struck out five in a losing effort, with Justin Berg (So., Moorhead, Minn./Fargo Shanley HS) relieving him in the seventh after Erickson's double.
Marsh had two hits and drove in Augsburg's other run on a double in the third inning. He had two doubles in the game.
Sam Gross (Fr., Springfield, Minn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate. Chris Siverson (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) and Clayton Horgen (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) each had two hits for the Cobbers. Horgen had two doubles, driving in two runs.
Concordia scored all its runs in the first two innings of the second game, shutting down the Auggies behind a solid pitching performance by Derek Dormanen (Fr., Menahga, Minn.), who struck out five while allowing two walks and six hits.
Eric Mogenson (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) allowed all seven earned runs in the first inning-and-a-third.
Jeff Deeb (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched effectively the rest of the way, striking out eight while allowing just three hits and two walks.
Mike Schwalen (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) and Storholm had two hits apiece.
Mike O'Hair (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had a double for the Auggies.
Tim Miller (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) went 3-for-4 with a run driven in and two runs scored to pace the Cobbers. Chad Felstul (So., Morris, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Augsburg plays at Gustavus Adolphus in an MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday (4/19), while Concordia plays at Hamline. Both doubleheaders are at 2:30 p.m.
