MENOMONIE, Wis. (4/2/00) -- After completely taking Augsburg College apart in game one, it was UW-Stout that was dismantled on the diamond in game two as the Blue Devils split a pair of nonconference games Sunday, April 2 at Nelson Field.
Stout (9-8-1) pounded out 19 hits in game one, chasing three Auggie pitchers to take a 15-3 decision that was shortened to a seven-inning contest due to the 12-run rule. The second game was a different contest, as Augsburg (4-11) carried a 12-2 lead into the ninth before Stout showed some scoring life in the bottom of the inning before losing, 12-8.
In the opener, Stout scored in all but the second inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after one, mostly on the strength of three home runs. Augsburg got all of their runs in the second.
JR Dachel (Sr., Bloomer, Wis.), Brad O'Connell (Jr., Elk Mound, Wis.), Dave Rueber (Jr., Afton, Minn.) and Nick Kalina (So., Potosi, Wis.) led the way at the plate, although every starter got at least one hit. Dachel went 3-for-4 with three RBI on a double, triple and home run. O'Connell was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a home run. Rueber was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two home runs. Kalina was 3-for-3.
Matt Lunde (So, Eau Claire) picked up the win, striking out seven as he allowed three hits and two earned runs.
Both of Augsburg's runs came from
Mike O'Hair (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), who had one hit.
Adam Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) and
Joe Seehusen (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had the other Auggie hits.
The second game was a nightmare for the Blue Devils, who nearly matched Augsburg hit-for-hit, but twice left the bases loaded and twice stranding two in scoring position. Stout managed 13 hits in the game to Augsburg's 15. Augsburg took command of the game in the middle innings, scoring four runs in the fourth and four in the sixth.
Adam Dittrich (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) led the Auggies with two doubles while scoring three runs.
Jared Trost (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) also had two doubles, scoring one run.
Pat Marsh (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two hits and scored three runs.
Rich Storholm (So., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had the big bat for the Auggies, stroking three hits in six at-bats and driving in five runs. He also had a double in the game.
Dave Fransen (Fr., Farmington, Minn.) picked up the win for the Auggies on the mound, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work.
Jared Lynch (So., Jordan, Minn.) finished the game for the Auggies.
Stout exploded for six runs in the bottom of the ninth when Kurt Ploog (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) came in as a pinch hitter and led off with a double. The Blue Devils batted around and Ploog came back to get his second double of the inning, driving in the final two runs of the game.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (4/5) with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Bethel College in Arden Hills, Minn. Stout has a week off before traveling to New Ulm, Minn., April 10 to face Martin Luther College.
